Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > RAPTOR 90 destroyed clutch liner on after first flight !!!

my liner was totally worn out after first flight today. i was breaking in my engine and used no more than 60% throttle. i get all this black dust in the bottom of the fan shroud.
the second flight i get this squealing metal noise and the engine rev really high and head speed doesn't pick up and i cant lift off.

it was some blue liner that was pre-glued to the clutch bell then i got the kit. it was the raptor 90se. the engine was a thunder tiger pro 90 heli engine. i had the needle out 2 1/2 turn on that first flight. all i did was low hovering and some gentle pirouette. nothing hard at all.

is this the fault of the liner or am i doing something wrong. i'm going to replace a new liner, but don't want to have this problem again.

I have read in other posts that some of the liners aren't glued in very well from the factory. I built a 90SE last winter. After reading that, I didn't want to take any chances, so I cut the liner out and epoxied a new one in. I have been running it all summer with no problems.

liner

Do you have a gov in the 90? if so turn it on and hover the heli at 1850 on the head, at 60% throttle it may have been slipping some and you may have not heard it slipping so its hard to say, or the gap could have been to large but the problem on the clutches was taken care of a long time ago but once in a while I see this problem pop up, you can do this if the gap is larger than 10 thous shim out with a piece a paper behind the liner to close the gap down you can search this out on RR Dino

Having the same problems with the 50 clutch. Sounds like too much clearance between clutch and bell liner. Needs to be about .004-.005 thousandths on a side clearance.

thanks guys for your respond. i do have the governor installed, but i turned it off because i was break-in the engine. the liner was indeed all worn out because i took it apart and saw the liner in the clutch bell all gone. it was just bare metal. but there was a liner there in the first place though. it was already glue on then i got the kit.

I fixed my R50 bell by glueing in the PV0324 HD clutch liner for a 90. If you go this route, check all your stacked up tolerances to make sure you'll have the right clearance after you glue in the new liner.

Its also nice to have a nylon plug/mandrel made to form the liner to the bell. You will get exact clearance this way. Some use electrical tape wrapped around the clutch to help fit the liner. You'll have to make sure the amount of tape you use mics .008-.010 inch bigger on the clutch OD. I prefer using the plug/mandrel method. Its more precise. Hope this helps

i just order some PV0324 HD clutch liner for a 90. i hope it doesn't do it again this time. i wonder if thunder tiger use some kind of cheap glue to assemble the liner or was it something i did to the engine.
i know i wasn't hitting the throttle hard at all. i was breaking it in and weren't using a lot of throttle at all. i get all this black dust on the bottom of the fan shroud and in the engine carburetor. now i have to disassemble the engine and clean up all this mess.

the manual said they use 30 minute epoxy to glue the liner, i wonder if they indeed use 30 min epoxy or just cheap ca glue. but the liner was all worn out to the bare metal.

man what a miserable first fight.

Some use CA, some 30 minute epoxy, and some use JB Weld. I read a lot of posts of people using JB Weld so this is what I used. So far so good. Plus its easy to clean up the excess.

I think i got it figure out why my clutch was slipping and wear out prematurely.
I greased the clutch needle bearing when i assemble the kit, and on that first flight the grease came out the needle bearing and got onto the bell and liner. The clutch was slipping on the greased liner and prematurely wear out the liner.

lesson learned. Do not grease the clutch needle bearing.

so now i got to figure out how to remove the grease from the needle bearing, before i ruin another liner.
