Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > Fuel magnets ?

I just installed a fuel magnet in my 90 EVO . I have had it for a while in my flight box. I attended a Fun Fly and heard there were problems with the Fuel Magnets disintegrating anf clogging the fuel filter etc. . AT IRCHA I saw them for sale at the Min . Aircraft booth and they had a white foam instead of the one I have which is dark material ?
Any opinions on this ?
Thanks,

I have one as well and it is with the white foam. A couple of things to be aware of.
1 Always leave fuel in the tank. 1/2 tank or so, if you don't the foam will dry up and fall to bits.
2 You will have to replace the faom more then expected to prevent it from doing what your talking about.

I have heard of some doing it pretty often, some are longer. I believe it partially at least has to do with how it is stored "climate controlled" or in the heat.

I myself use a OS bubbless clunk now and have had no problems.

Running a fuel magnet with sealed pressure lines off the back plate of the motor (aka YS) you will just leave a small amount of fuel in the tank to keep the magnet wet after your flights.
Whenever you use a muffler pressured system (aka OS, Thunder Tiger and etc.) after your flight you will pump fuel back into the tank to push the hot gas out of the tank, then pump some fuel back out leaving just a small amount of fuel to keep the magnet from drying out. This all depends on how many flights and how often, but usually I don't do it till after the last flight of the day. Using this method my fuel magnets have lasted me for quite some time (well over a year).

I agree with Raptorwoody in regards to keeping the foam element wet. Once it is wet, keep it wet. That means immediately after any given fight, including the last flight of the day. Yes, take it home with a full tank and clip off all lines connecting to the tank. Had a crash? Fill the tank up and keep it wet still... unless you plan on replacing the foam element.

Hi

You can use also the OS engines clunk.
works almost as good with no degradation.
It is made from steel.

I have a white foam one as well.
Been in use for about 8 months now with a YS50 (crankcase pressure) without any issues.

I always refill my tank immediately after every flight. My bird is always ready to go
I store the heli with the tank full of fuel as well (storage lasts only 6 days).

I have had the foam particles problem burn up a YS SR in my N9. It went lean and quit, luckily i got it down in 1 piece for my first auto and looked to see the filter was stopped up and there were pieces floating in the tank. I had been told if it was a pump motor that it wouldn't need fuel in the tank while stored. WRONG. I have the OS clunk in my 700 and in the process of converting everything to them.

This is the advised I was recently given . I should use the fuel magnet with a YS type engine only. Muffler pressure will make the fuel magnet deteriorate very quickly.

I thought I could use one on the header tank pick up!
Dumb As* me!
Had to Auto in when fuel filter clogged.....
Muffler pressure and Fuel Magnets= Auto'd landings
Take the advice...

Have been using fuel magnet on my 600N with muffler pressure for exactly 1 year now, no problems whatsoever.
One important thing to do though: refuel the heli as soon as possible after landing.

Can the fuel magnet break apart during filling up of the tank. I am using a high speed pump to fill up and am afraid of damaging the fuel magnet.

It shouldn't. If it does - it probably means it has deteriorated to the point it needs to be replaced.
I've been fueling my heli with a 12v pump for the past year w/ the fuel magnet.

well, I did not listened to the advise. Toaday I went flying the Evo 90 with the fuel magnet . It really got extremely lean , I brought it down and richened the needles and it did not help, I took the fuel filter open and !!!!! it was totally full of fuel magnet disintegrated material. You guys were so RIGHT ! That was after maybe three gallons of fuel .

Roberto.

It gets damaged from exhaust gases if you run muffler pressure.

After flying, you need to disconnect the pressure line from the muffler and fill them empty the tank to push out the comdsution gases. And leave some fuel in the tank to keep the magnet wet.

One of the by products of running nitromethane is nitric acid inthe exhaust.

Ive read countless posts on how to use, and not to use, a fuel magnet. I use one with a YS50 and have no problems whatsoever.
But I have never seen any clear instructions from the manufacturer.

YS50 is easier, no exhaust gases in the tank. I just leave a fraction of an inch of fuel to keep it wet. And mine has sat for a month or more between flying. No problems.
