You will not be happy with the rattle can clear fuel proofer from your LHS. What most of us do is have it clear coated by an automotive body and paint shop. They use a 2-part catalyzed clear that is completely fuel proof.

I'm using two-component automotive "octoral". Works great but you need good mask if you want to use it, it's toxic

BTW are you sure that dark blue is a good idea? I expect that it will look black against the sky, very hard to see.

Im not sure of the functionality of the color It seems to really pop in
sunlight and I was hoping the white accents would be enough. Only time will tell I am a close in flyer I have trouble making the most of my airspace. I have another unfinished canopy If I need it MY BladeCPPRO I painted flourescent orange that was easy to see in any light.

Our local auto paint store carries a 2 part clear in a spray can, its called Spray Max, Part N3680062. The Catalyst is separated by a bladder which is punctured just before use. The can will do about 3 canopy's but you must use it within 24 hours. Sprays very well and gives a nice finish.

If you have a spray gun find a PPG dealer and get a quart of Omni Clear and the required activator. It is about as inexpensive as you can get; a little will go a long way and it is fuel proof and sprays very well.

I love the smell of nitro in the morning..

Tony, that looks excellent. Probaby one of my favorite colors. In fact, that was the color of my first car. A 72 GTO. Long gone --I was told the same thing about that color (hard to see against the sky), but let me know what conclusion you come to. I like to fly far out sometimes.

Thanks Carbon Copter bet that GTO looked sweet. I got the raptor electronics working need a couple extensions for my gyro and I will be setting her up for her first hover. It may take me longer to clear coat the paint than get the heli ready. I cant imagine having a problem finding this one in the sky but time will tell it should be much easier than my 450TREXSE. I am one of those plank flyers who imagines themselves in the cockpit so Im not really thinking orientation unless I am hovering which is usually close enough to see. I am not a big sky flyer just use enough space to fly circuits. But who knows my flying style may change with this bigger heli.

Yup, that's the stuff I use and it gives great results.... about $19 for the quart plus about $9 for the hardener...... no thinning is needed. Just mix 2 parts clear to one part activator and shoot....

As has been mentioned but worth repeating, this stuff (all catalyzed paints) are EXTREMELY hazardous to use unless you have the proper respirator.....It will cause irreversible damage to your lungs if misused.

I use a positive pressure system designed for the hobbyist and so I'm breathing fresh air once the mask is on.....here is the link....

Good idea to cover up as much of your exposed skin as well...... Spraying outside is better as long as it's not windy.....

I tend to agree with w.pasman, with the dark blue though it may stand out in the driveway, when you put it up against the blue sky it could be a "Little" hard to see!
If you have the chance spray on a contrasting color in some fashion do it! When you get the Raptor up in the air you will need some sort of contrasting type color (look at the aftermarket companies colors!)

I have enclosed a photo of a standard "Bleach Bottle" type canopy Raptor Titan w/ decals and a contrasting color painted canopy!

Check it out and decide if you might want to add some contrasting color to help it stand out before you shoot clear on it!

Why didnt I listen?

I went shopping for omni clear but let the local oreilys paint specialist convince me I could shoot the parts with a rattle can they had. Now I am left with a milky blue finish that looks terrible. I guess I will look at the lesser of two evils. I can now start over paint it in a more contrasting color and use the right stuff. Can someone please explain their painting steps like primer or no primer, acrylic or other based paints and of course the omni clear to finish.

Get the canopy painted the way you want it and take it to a good autobody shop and ask them to clear it for you.

Yes you can spray it yourself with omni and after you do it a few times it might even come out ok. But unless you really want to learn the process and take the time to get good at it you will have MUCH better result having someone spray it with proper technique in a nice booth. Even a half hearted paint job with some rattle cans can really look good if it's well cleared and polished.

I have seen a few guys spend a lot of time to really do a good paint job and ruin it with a bad coat of clear. It peals off, little dust bumps, runs that will take you all day to sand out and one of you buddies will still say "hey, looks good except for that run!!"

Save yourself the pain

Painting (and getting great results) is a real learning curve. If you fly your heli hard (and crash/damage the canopy) my personal opinion is not to waste too much time painting the canopy! You can spend a lot of time and make it look great (until you have an accident) . I paint my canopies so I have good visibility of them while flying so I can keep track of my orientation. If you look at my paint job closely, you can find "errors", but they look great to me while flying.

As far as clear coat goes, I use Dupli-Color Clear Acrylic Lacquer (duplicolor.com) for my clear coats. I've purchased it at a local auto paint supply store.

Nice looking canopy! Never had any luck painting the bleach bottle canopies of the R50 series. That must be a fiberglass canopy,if its the bleach-bottle type canopy, well there goes a nice paint job.
