Anyone ever take an old battery backup from a computer and connect the leads that would otherwise go to the small onboard battery and connect them to your car's battery and use it as an inverter in your car to power a computer? Will it work, I'm worried about it over-heating.

As long as the UPS onboard battery was 12v - I don't see why it wouldn't..

great idea btw.. I've got a few dead UPS's laying around here w/ dead batteries.

Most UPS's have an audible alarm that indicates the unit is working off of a battery. You might need to disable this alarm somehow. Otherwise it might get a little annoying.

That can and will work in some cases, as I have seen it and done it before. But most APC and Tripplite UPSs will not turn on without being plugged in. The simpler/older models probably will though.

Oh and the alarm problem is solved by simply removing the smaller speaker on the main board.
