Main Discussion > Nitro carb setting?????????

I am having a problem with getting the correct carb or throttle curve settings.
I have flown planes for years but with them the carbs are alot easier to setup.
I am having problems with both my Rap 30 with the os37 and my Rap 50 with the os 50 sx h so I am sure it is me and not the engines.
I replaced the TT39 in my 30 with the os37 and have yet to get it to run correct.
It seems be running rich on the botom thru midrange but cleans out nice thru the top, problem is I don,t fly yet on the top end.
If I lean the bottom out any more then I am the motor overheats and will quit halway thru the tank.
I am not sure if I am not getting a good throttle curve setup and am overworking the motor or if its just my carb setting.
Basicly the same problem with the 50 but its alot closer.
I have both setup with -4 4 +9 on my pitch.
I want to stay here for now but need to know what to look for as far as setting up the motors to be correct.
I don,t have a tach but will purchase one if thats what I need to do.
i just dont understand how you can run the heli and check RPM,s all at the same time.
I just need guided in the correct direction on this.
There is alot to learn about setting up a heli and it takes time and experience.
I probably could find someone here to help but if they do it i still won,t know how.
Thanks!
I fly the heck out of my mini titan and don,t have to worry about the carb setting.

I think your problem may be in the throttle curve, not the engine adjustment. If you are producing a decent amount of smoke throughout the engine range and not overheating, your pretty well on the mark. You know already, too lean means flame out. I would try this: (Assuming you are using a 5 point system) A pitch curve with 0 deg at point 3, 5 1/5 deg at point 4, full positive at point 5, full neg at point 1 and average point 2. On your throttle: set point 3 around 40% +/- This setting should drive the head at the rpm you wish to maintain. At point 4, up it to 63%+/-. This is your hover point and your head speed should not drop or rise. Set point 5 at wide open throttle. Point 1 should be at idle. Point 2 will need to be played with to get a good transition throttling up and a setting which will not over drive the head on a descent to landing.

Play with it for a while and you will find the sweet spot for your engines, airframes and flying style.

A Governor will help immensely, and they are very cheap now. You only need rudimentary curves as a backup then...

A tach is a good thing to have. No, it is a must. You can even gather a few fellow fliers at the field and share one single tach, but don't just eyeball your RPM.

Don't fly and tach at the same time! Always have someone (preferably a flier) at the field tach for you.

You will need an assistant and an optical tach. The assistant will peer thru the OT at the rotor blades and tell you the head speed. The one I have is from Miniature Aircraft. But if you get a governor, you will rarely wish you had a tach.
