Aerial Photography and Video > What would be the reccomended R/C helicopter for R/C aerial photography.

Should I get the Bergen Aerial platform? Should I get a Fury? Should I get an XCell gasser? What about something more enviornmentally friendly like an electric helicopter?

I would perfer an electric helicopter but I don't know of any that would support a payload of something like a Nikon CoolPix 5700 or a digital camcorder.

I would perfer a MA Fury because at the end of the day I can drop the payload and do some 3D flying?

What would you guys recommend?

With one of these puppies you can safely carry a IMAX or 70mm camera with no problems.

I lost my infamous tag line.

Now twoobears you are being a little silly.

This is exactly what our friend requires according to his descriptions:

http://www.joker-usa.com/maxi-joker.htm

It is the DBs

Check out anything here with a photo link all taken from a Joker CX: http://runryder.com/search.htm?acti...&searchid=91351

Very funny TwoBeers Thanks for the info PAL-rotor.

What would you recommend as far as a gas powered heli?

"I would perfer a MA Fury because at the end of the day I can drop the payload and do some 3D flying?"

I would recommend a Fury Extreme just because they are so damn fun!

The funny thing though is that I fly my Fury at least 5 days a week and the routine is:

1. make sure batteries are charged and fuel up
2. remove plug and get all the residue out from the MPII drainage
3. start up and let it warm up a couple minutes with a few fundalmentals
4. idle up and work it for about 20 seconds
5. land, adjust high end
6. idle up and more work, if all sounds/performs great have at it, if not
repeat step 5

With the Joker, which flys when the lighting suits me, the routine is:
1. make sure batteries are charged
2. have at it

BTW...there is a Gasser Fury in the future...

Cheers...Jeff

Wow. that's the coolest looking electric heli I've seen. Considering the price tag on it, how does it compare in power to say a Fury with an OS 91 c-spec in it? If you got the 3d version of the joker. The motor is like $450 or $500 USD.. the kit is $1000 and I don't think it comes with motor, so $1500 before electronics and big assed battery etc.. that thing better have a real good comparison hehe

What ever you decide on for the helicopter strap one of Johns airfoil systems to it and your taking stellar photos ten minuets later.

As far as the Yamahas and the imax camera go, its already been done.

Go easy on this one Pal Rotor?

You are the Man! & we Love ya like a brother.

Lets not bash anyone any more on this one. His (John's) system works too damn well not to be mentioned.

Get your platform in the air and start posting some of your results.

Email/PM any of us if we can be of any help &/or answer any questions.

Flyboy,

Ouch!? Me bash? No time, no need. From what I've seen lately John's stuff is working well and I'm having too much fun doing this kind of thing my Logo 20....photographer/pilot (me) on the grass just north of the red car right at the top.

Cheers!

Julian

bashing

defintely a attitude or choice of the prefered words that want /dont want to be heard.. everyone has a opinion.. of products and preferences,

to be pro one brand or kind is their preference not nessesarily a bad thing.. just their view..

be open minded to everyones opinions and views and life will be alot easier..for alot of people..

still working,, retracts should come in this morn,,
everything else heli/mechanics related is fitted/complete..

now to figure out the mounting system,,
the great thing about using the raven/ys61 is that theres NO servos infront of the engine,,,ie.. dont even need the radio tray,, so the front of the heli is completely open for use..

for some reason every time i've gone to the site you posted earlier it tells me i'm not authorized ????? dont know why run128bit/and norton
anyway the site with the relatively small gimble./'s
by the way a gimble is just a mounting piece??yes??

im plannning on using a mount/gimble that will start inside the helis "cockpit" and extend out of the bottom just enough to give the camera's lense a view around... hopefully then retract up into the heli for safer landings...
feel free to let john know my project and see if he thinks he can help/or give suggestions..good/bad ect...
{i'm assuming john is the gimble man}
talk and post some pics this evening

Hi, I never mentionned a gimble guy. John (Ohnemus) is from Airfoil Helicam. He makes camera mounting systems that can attach to the existing skids of a heli. They are not a gymbal system exactly.

A gymbal is a mechanism that allows a camera to move in (usually) several axes/orientations - typically tilt (rotating down and up) pan (rotating side to side) and sometimes roll (round and round) - and any combination of the above. Some gymball systems have integrated vibration isolation.

(Just as a matter of observation, not representation) John's mounts typically offer servo-motorised pan and tilt and the ability to prevent roll getting out of hand either through damping or a combination of damping and mechanical gyroscope. The key issue for your design requirements however is not met by John's systems because the vital anti-vibration mechanism is not designed into the tilt pan mechanism i.e. the complete unit including vibration control won't fit in the front of your heli.

Given your specific intentions, you will need either need to custom build something - or possibly purchase a http://www.rotaryaerials.com/AerialProducts/G6.htm which wil/stands a better chance to fit in the space you are allowing. i.e. a small unit that has integrated vibration control.

The chances are that the Rotary Aerials system, whilst excellent (to the best of my knowledge) is actually overkill. Meaning that you probably only want to have a Tilt mechanism.

I don't say overkill to demean your project (the only reason I'm writing this at all is because I'm begining to like your style), no I'm saying this because you are intending to use th CV-1 for image composition. No-one has enough fingers for one-man operation of a 3-axis camera mount and a 3-axis helicopter all at the same time, plus it's unneccesary to attempt it when you have direct hand and eye control over image composition via the helicopter's controls - all except Tilt. I've proven beyond doubt with my Logo 20 system that you can do everything in hovering flight i.e. move the heli left right up down pan left pan right move-in, move out, i.e. everything except pointing the nose of the heli down at the ground or up at the sky (otherwise of course you exit hovering flight).

Finally regards Roll control (by which I mean forget turning the camera in circles deliberately - I mean keeping it level) - this is only a major issue with a mount that is suspended from the skids to provide vibration isolation - this is not bashing, John has done some clever stuff to work round this issue in his mounts so that they function as a unit. However, for the kind of mount you are buying or building, this can legitimately be ignored, especially for stills work (by flying steady and using co-pilot) or nailed flat by other means beyond the scope of this thread. If you get stuck with vibration or stability give me a shout offline.

Good luck!

Send photos.

Julian.

Julian,

Bash is not the right choice of words. I just didn't want to start the whole story over again, and thought that his system should be mentioned.

Sorry if I came across wrong.

That last picture is one of the nicest that I have seen! Great work.

It looks like you have your system dialed as well.

Nice to hear from you & see that you are doing sooo well!

Post a picture of your logo set up if you haven't already.

That's cool,

Flyboy, I'm excited for you and your work with RMax. But I'm concerned. Ever since you started telling us how great John's systems are, you stopped posting stuff of your own. Why? - good stuff, sadly missed.

Julian

Julian,

I am sorry to say but their are two things limiting me at the moment.

Ever since viewing the video footage from the gyro stabilized camcopter, my heart and interest have been focused on the video side of the production. I don’t want to say that I focused on stills because I was getting mediocre video out of the platform that I had been using, but that was the case. Now my passion is leaning toward video as it has soooo much more information in it.

At the moment I am without a gasser, I have a Predator 91 but as you well know I don't use that for video work unless I have no other options.

I am just about to take delivery of one of Johns "media packages" complete with a JR gas helicopter and a second gyro stabilized airfoil mount.

I am also working on getting one of the two Maxi Jokers up in the air. I have one of Johns small M1 30 mounts that I shoots amazing footage, and will carry both a video camera (small) and a high quality digital still camera.

The little bird has been kicking my arse lately, it might be time to retire that little guy, as old age and high miles have made the little guy, when a little temperamental, beside it wont carry video very well, so on to the next. I am sure I will get around to getting it back up and in the air, but ever since slapping an auto, I haven't been able to get her to purr like she used to? Frustrating........

All of this sound like rubbish, and a poor excuse not to fly, I have been involved with a grant that currently has my energy focused elsewhere at the moment. I long to be flying more and shooting video and pictures but I haven't the time. I have been flying the larger platforms a lot lately, and traveling to boot.

I also have been getting my elevated perspective fix, by living vicariously through you all and the increadable shots that you all are contributing.

By the way those last few posts of yours, Lee's and Jeff’s are mind blowing. Some of the nicest work I have seen. Please keep the great shots a coming.

I hope to have the time and energy to get my act together and jump back in the game. Give me another week or two and then start the heckling.

Thanks for your thoughts. I hope that you are all doing as nicely as your work would indicate.

Hi flyboy
I have a raptor 30 with a system that allows to hold a digital camara to elevate it to to the wished height and a totally control from earth, here I have to have a proper authorization in order to take pictures. I dont' know if is the same in other places. I have beautiful pictures that I took with my heli.
