Don't think you can really put a price on it. Think it's going to be a hanger queen once I get it done

I flew one in 1980. ONE time! bought it used, No gyro but the collective had a mechanical mix to the TR. I flew it straight out and straight back at me never getting above 15ft. I finally dumped it in the grass before it got back to me.
This guy that was at the flying field came over to see how bad it was and to just say hi since he was the main heli guy back then. His name is Billy Pierce and he was a Kalt rep at the time. He asked how long have I been flying RC. I said that was just it! No planks or anything. He couldn't believe I flew it back at me nose in so long and not loose it sooner. We became friends and sadly my financial status wouldn't let me continue the hobby back then. So I waited 22 years and got back into it in 2002. Billy had passed away long before 02. That FIRST heli will always stick in my mind.

I had one too, that I bought second hand from a friend a long, long time ago! I never managed to finish it - missing fan, belt and engine gear - I just kept it as a static display, always thinking that I'd eventually get it in the air. It ended up following me here in Cz and started gathering dust in my garage...
Lack of time, and interest (I read everywhere it flew horribly) I recently gave it away to someone on this forum. Bye bye Alouette!

Only YOU could have made that judgement. Believe nothing of what you hear and half of what you see. I would have tried it just the same to confirm my suspicions.

Yeah, I know : I though about using different blades, reducing the pitch in order to have a higher RPM and gain in responsiveness (most of the bad comments were about that) but I had many other projects around, parts would have been an issue and the guy I gave it to seems much more into antique helis than I am, so really, no regrets.
It's only after I shippedd it that I found that those guys carry parts : http://www.americanrcheli.com

I may have a collective pitch head somewhere in my workshop for one of these. Anyway, the weak link in these models is the itty-bitty gear, which drives the tail rotor. Touch the grass just once and it's probably history and trying to replace it is probably a fruitless effort. Contact Heliheadcase for more info as he's a veritable fountain of information on older helis, far more than I.

Isn't there a site in Canada that caries the old Kavan parts?

Try this place.

I'm about to restore my Aloutte to flyable condition and they seem to have most of the parts I need. BTW, I've owned mine since 1979. Sure would like to convert it to collective pitch.

And yes, that little gear does break when the tail rotor even just touches the ground. I know.

Try not. Do or do not. There is no try

Convert?

For some of you die-hard, adventurous builders out there, it may be possible to convert the mechanics to something more modern.
A newer head, with direct-link eCCPM servos shouldn't be too hard to do.

Adding a torque tube TR drive from a modern heli might also be doable.

This sounds like a fun project for the upcoming winter!

Thought of that too. I've had the thing for 30 years. Sure would be nice to see it actually fly.

They actually fly pretty nicely albeit quite slowly on cyclic and look great once they're in the air. I've had several of the Kavan products including the 286 with retracting skids, the Alouette II, and of course, the Jet Ranger, which flew pretty nicely. Franz Kavan was ahead of his time in many ways, but for scale the real deal was Hirobo.

With respect to trainers, what the Germans call a pod-and-boom machine like what we almost all fly these days, the "man" was Mr. Dieter Schlüter. If you get a chance, eyeball one of his designs like the Champion, Heliboy, or Scout and you'll see many of the things we take for granted today.

Need to spell it correctly first

I've never flown an Alouette but have the parts for maybe three of them. Don't ask, please! I believe the tail drive gears are the same part as in the Jet Ranger and if meshed closely and greased regularly (reminds me - need to lube the tail gears on my Kavan before tomorrow evening!), there's nothing fragile about them.

Thomas Gregory's americanrcheli.com is a good start but what is really in stock? I was hoping he'd be at IRCHA this year as there were two flying Jet Rangers active, mine and the one of RipMosher. Tom would have been proud

There's a specific design point of the Alouette main rotor head, and that's a reduction in flybar/feathering ratio, something unique here. Should allow for quicker cyclic over the fixed-pitch heli's that have the flybar going straight through the head, connected solidly to the blades. Badgerfarm brought his Kavan Alouette to IRCHA but didn't feel it was airworthy at the time. I really wanted to see how it handled. Oh well, next time...

So many heli's - too little time...

Now why on Earth would you want to add CCPM to the mix?
It would be more trouble than it is worth.
