e-Electric General Discussion > ESC for Batteries, how to figure out which one

Looking at purchasing a Trex 600, and I find that people are running everything from 6s1p to 10s setups.

How do you figure out which ESC size you need? Not looking for brands or models at this time, just size ,35A 100A etc.

Does the motor play into the size fo the ESC?

Is there an issue with just getting one that is too big?

Sorry for the simple question, I just can't get my head around this one.

Oh boy, I get to do another rebuild, yea

How many amps your motor will pull and how many volts your batts. will put out.

6S turns out to be the maximum voltage for quite a few ESCs (like the Castle Phoenix series except for the HV designated ones). Be sure your ESC can handle a fully charged battery at 4.2V per cell. (25.2V for 6S and 42V for 10S).

A good starting point will be to get a 2500w ESC for a 600 class heli.

For 6s, deviding 2500w/25v(6s) will mean 100amp ESC
For 10s, that is 67amp ESC or bigger.

This is targetting hard 3d flying so, if you are going to do mild setup, you can multiply the result by 0.8 or so.

You can also size the pack in a similar fashion.
If a 6s5000mah works well, you can determine an equivalent energy density by using the formula

mah = (6s/xs)*5000mah so 10s pack can have about 3000mah for similar duration so you can either go with 3300mah or 3850mah.

red, that is exactly what I'm looking for, is there any issue with using a 100A esc for a 6s setup then? Besides spending more money then is needed...

None other than little extra weight and price.

what is the advantage of using a 10s pack as appose to a 6s pack is it really worth the extra money

It really depends on the size of the heli, and what motor you are going to run. Also how you will fly it, Sports or 3D.

10s requires high voltage capable ESCs. Depending on the pack choice, you might end up with a heavier heli which might offset the gain you might have from a high powered setup.

If you are increasing from 6s5000 to 10s5000, due to reduced current requirement, your pack will last longer with longer flight time for each flight. But, you typically endup using lower capacity packs for 10s so the load on the pack will most likely be a wash.

With initial introduction of 20c packs, there was a current delivery problem which was solved by going higher cell count. But, with introduction of 25-30c cells, that is not true anymore. So the advanges seem to get blurred.

We run both 6s and 9s version of Trex600. 9s is heavier than 6s by about 1/2 lb but both perform equally well.

To complicate things more, if you choose Kontronik Jazz ESC's for 10s, Like the 55-10-32, even though "rated" 55 amps, with a heatsink added we push them to 120 amp peaks
