Main Discussion > Fast backward flight & heli doing 180s

I just started backward flights and funnels.
I noticed that in certain situations when going fast backwards circles, the heli does a 180 on its own!?!? not that it does not look cool but it is very surprising...
Any idea?
I have 2 600n with JR 770 gyros & 8900g servos & a 500 with a JR 770 & 3500 servo and I only have it on one 600N, although I pushed this one more...

You obviously have not setup your tail right.

and what in particular would that be? the helis work well in FFF, One has 17 gallons through and I only noticed this in this situation...

Well yeah, helis with out gyros will do fine in forward flight too. It's clear you did not set up your gyro properly. Is it possible that its in rate mode?

absolutely not rate mode...How could I do funnels in rate mode anyway??
just to be clear, it would do that only under heavy stress.
BTW, I noticed the same behavior on the sim just now...so it must be because I need to be more subtle in my backward flight...

It's easy to blow the tail on the sim. It should be much more difficult on the real thing if you've got a good gyro and it's properly set up along with a good mechanical setup.

That is your tail blowing out. Have you tried turning up the gain on your gyro? There could be a lot of reasons that make it happen. Improper set up as already mentioned, or it could be as simple as bogging down the head speed so much that your tail just does not have the power to hold.

ok, will try the gain. mechanical setup is fine. backward flight needs even more gyro tuning as it seems...

Track tail, turn up gain . Also if you load heli up you will loose tail authority when loaded causing tail to blow out .

I dont know how to fly just how to not crash !!!!!

Lots of reasons why tail might not hold.....

Inadequate thrust due to blades being too small.
Binding linkage (somewhere) causing overpowering of servo.
Badly balanced blades causing binding of the pitch fork.
Nackered tail servo.
Gyro gain too low.
Bogged HS leading to compromised tail authority.

Try some piroing FF at different speeds to get a feel for how whippy the tail gets.

As Yug said but also if you cant piro FF try flying fast sideways and see if tail holds . Turn up gain until tail starts waging while flying sideways then back down gain until wagging stops then try tail first again .

I dont know how to fly just how to not crash !!!!!
