Would it make sense to purchase both a still and motion camera? Should I purchase one camera that does both? What camera makes and models would you recommend.

Does the Nikon coolpix 4500 allow the video-out to be on continuously, to allow use for the downlink?

You need to specify the kind of work you will do with it.

Re continuous video output from N Coolpix

Here's something V. Cool that was brought to my attention by Elossam:

http://space.virgilio.it/schieppati.m@tin.it/prod02.htm

it's a dedicated programmable RC camera trigger that (on a skip read) seems to periodically re-activate a digicam to stop it going to sleep - as well as doing all the normal things you might hope for - like triggering the shutter.

With this I think your answer is yes!

Julian.

Hi Julian,

That is awesome!
Do you know what pins activate the shutter from the serial cable for the Nikon Coolpix family?

Cheers...Jeff

Sorry, I have a Sony DSC P9 which does not even have a serial cable (unless you count the S in USB).

I plan to dismantle the camera and hotwire the "shutter release" to use aforementioned device.

Edit:

To answer your question, following a quick check around the internet, it seems pretty clear that the short answer is "none of the pins activate the shutter". The pinouts (below) offer a data interface to the MC-EU1 remote trigger - but that's going to be calling up the shutter in software. (Don't risk sticking anything down the socket - the USB version has a +VE rail on one of the pins - and either way it won't help trgger the camera).

Check the manual! - a much better plan, at least in principle - not sure is that will give you the pinouts.

I wonder if this is of any help:

Hey Jeff, remember we were talking about Jokers and Logos - I know we agreed on the Jokerm but I just picked up a Logo 20 on e-bay in the UK - too good to miss and I love it.

Cheers,

Julian.

He He - you could always try this!

On a quick inspection, it seems that the $100 Nikon MC-EU1 remote trigger is not a simple switch, I'm sure there's a geek out there somewhere who has figured out the protocols - but back in Realityville, chances are we are both into hacking the mainswitch. (That is unless you liked the Lego alternative).

Cheers!

The oylmpus c3030z and 4040z does both stills and movies in one unit . I have a 3030 z and I feel its one of the best ever made . all the stills in my gallery were taken with this camera. Much smaller than the coolpix . I was afraid what the vibration would do to the rotating lens in the nikon.

Thanks for the information folks!

So the Nikon CoolPix 5700 would be a bad choice due to the vibration of the helicopter? Should I stay away from the 5700 and just go with the Nickon CoolPix 4500 and the Sony TRV950?

I love Lego's!

Julian,

Let me now how the Logo 20 goes and what payload your hauling around.

Also, there is a place called http://www.harbortronics.com that has a few cool gagdets for the coolpix(s) adn others, but nothing that is a plug and play solution that I would require since I'm not a very smart man.

Island Boy,

As far as video the Coolpix's will grab 320x240 (.mov) that you could upscale/convert to a NTCS/PAL format if needed for presentation.

Currently I'm using the 995 for strictly stills (the smaller brother to the 4500). Works great, but now I'm leaning towards the 5000/5700 to see if there is a greater jump in lens quality. (5000's on e-bay keep getting cheaper)

Can't offer any help with video. I'm waiting for the 720P consumer models to become affordable before I give motion a shot.

Cheers...Jeff

I posted this URL time ago, may be someone can find something interesting there. (not my case as I use a Canon G1)
There are a link to other cameras and protocols and some Nikons are on the list.
