Yup I'm here. I just finished my 2nd 21A 12v server power supply conversion. Now I have one at work and one at home. This will open up my charging options here at work. Here are a few pics. BTW I now have an extra 12V 8A power supply and if anyone wants it, pay shipping and it is yours.

Photo updated with labels.

Ya know.. I have one of those sitting in a box around here somewhere. I took it out when I upgraded a PC and put a larger one in. I should dig it out. A second power supply could come in handy.
What are you doing to convert it?

Gregor here. Just check'n in. No flying today, far to windy. Spent some time on the sim, tedious.

Here's one of the many conversion instructions.

I'm still leaning toward the bench supply. I've always wanted one. This is the one I'm looking at.

Like greg said there lots of how-tos out there. I also updated the photo of the inside with some labels. It is actually extremely simple. Connect +12V lines to plug. Connect GND lines to plug. Install 5ohm 10W resister between +5v and GND to load the +5v bus. Connect the green "PWR On" line to a switch and then to GND. I also added an LED so I know when it is on and since the PS had a thermally controlled fan, I went ahead and connected that to +12V and GND for added cooling, after I had finished all the wiring of course

THAT'S IT! Took me about an hour or so.

Thanks Guys!

Piece of cake. Now I DO need to dig up that old power supply... just because I can.

My middle daughter is bugging me to get the 450 out. I'm hoping the weather will cooperate tomorrow and give me a chance to do that. It's Time.

Yeah, its pretty easy but some crappy PS like one I got can't hold the Amp draw from charger long. Got me a 16amp 14v bench power supply for less then price of a PC power supply anyways.

Man I gotta say I am really liking my newest PC power supplies. They say 21A on the 12V bus. So far I have pulled as much as 16A and the voltage never budged from 12.1v. Me likes

As a note, if anyone wants me to convert a pc power supply into a bench power supply, let me know.

I am still usig the 12VPS out of a pentium 133MHZ PC anyone remember those? Question TJ Now back in the day my PS had no failsafes thermal or other. I looked at my supply and opted not to load the 5V buss I actually unsoldered all the wires and threw them away. And it runs just fine no problems. Did you have a problem with it unloaded? Curious I may want to use a newer PS someday. OH and Radio Shack makes a cool little analog voltmeter I wired into mine.

The first power supply's I tried were 486 era 200 watt models. They must be 15 years old. They would hold 12V for the first amp or two but if I pulled 4-5A, they would drop down to 11v. I am sure they would not supply their 8A rating at over 10v. So I tossed in a 5ohm resister on the 5v bus and the problem solved. It would then hold 11.9v all day long no matter what I pulled of the 12v bus. I even charged with my 10s on it and was pulling 9A, higher than the ratings with no problems. The nice thing about the old ones is they have no safety sensing. I mean you can run anything of them and they keep pumping out current. This is important when you do things like plug in a charger with them on, or power your heli off them. My new ones sense danger and shut off. So I can power my heli but it many times kicks off.

Anyhow I did no try the newer model without a 5v resister but with it, it works fine. I did notice that it states a minimum 5v draw of 1.5A on the label.

Night shift checking in. Not much going on. Tired from the week, but got some SIMing in. The peer pressure is getting to me, so started practicing flips. The best thing about flips are they are the entry and exit to inverted.
