I learned to fly with out a gyro, we won't talk about how long ago that was.
Set up was a lot more interesting when it was all mechanical

Just remember -- if the world didn't suck, we would fall off.

I think my pessimism is based on it being a Blade 400. Most Blade 400s are not normally in the hands of a pilot with the skill to pull that trick off.

Does that mean you want to take the bet? I've only got 8 flights on a real heli. How long do I have to fly for a JR770? How 'bout 20 seconds with a safe landing.
Thats alot longer than 3secs.
Are you in?!? lol!

Stick bangin' cuz my hands are shakin' !!

I also learned to fly without a gyro, and flew that way for many years (both fixed pitch and collective machines).

You can do it, but so much of your attention has to be dedicated to controlling yaw, that I am not sure that you would have much fun. The most minute power setting change will cause the tail to move, as will the wind (causing the machine to weather-vane).

After flying with modern gyros, I am not sure that I would ever even want to try without one.

back when i had a 401 - i used to setup the heli mechanically with the gyro turned off first - then turned on heading hold.
It's very challenging to say the least. But it is possible.

go ahead - try it
just give yourself some room

It also makes you respect that little gyro much more.

I learned to fly helis without a gyro in 1979. They were thought of as a crutch then, even banned from competition. I went on to learn loops, rolls and 540's without one. Funny thing is you only need about 1/4" of total (1/8" each way)pushrod movement to get enough tailrotor for all the spin rate you can stand in a 540!

Flying without one....let me put it this way...sitting on the bull at the gate is one thing. When they open the gate, it's a whole different ride! So it is when you lift off without a gyro! The whole ride suddenly just changed!

Hey I used to do that long ago With an american revolution even but since then, they invented the gyro

You should always learn to set up your heli in non heading hold mode to get it correct then switch it on to compensate for your lack of attention to the tail. Just like you should learn to add before getting the calculator!!!

If it doesn't fly sell it!

I flew a Helibaby and Heliboy with out any gyros.
The Helibaby was fixed pitch and the Heliboy had tail pitch adjustment
in the mixing arms. That was in the late 70s early 80s and I was a lot
younger then. We used plane 4 channel radios . Not sure if I would want to try it now but might to see if I could do it.
Thanks Tim

You can do it on Real Flight 4 it can be done but you will crash 100 times before you get it. So no don't it.

Cool!

Heli-Babies, Heli-Boys, and Kavan Jet Rangers!

All great machines-I still have a Heli-Baby and a Jet Ranger-I wish I had kept the Heli-Boy too.

I had a American R/C Revolution 40 and a Schluter heliboy. I tried the Revolution 40 first with little sucess. I then learned on the Heliboy and went back to the Revolution 40. The Heliboy had the mechanical tail rotor compensator on the collective pitch arm which really made a difference, as compared to the Revolution 40 without any compensation. I eventually went back to the Revolution 40 and could finally hover it too.

I saw John Simone loop the Revolution 40 at the Chicago trade show in 1977 or 1978. Then not to be out done, Bob Pinto did loops and rolls and a manuever called the pinwheel and even an autorotation with a Heliboy....all of this with a 4 channel radio and no gyro.

We really struggled then but it was fun everyday!

Ditto
Was it fun..not really, unless you have a masochistic streak in you.
But I still on a regular basis turn a new gyro down to 20% at rate settings and fine tune the mechanical setup.
