Is anybody flying without a gyro on purpose? My gyro is on the way to Horizon Hobby and I was thinking of flying without it.

Not me.
You must be Jonesing BAD to be thinking of this, lol.
Take your aggressions out on your sim until the gyro returns. Will be much cheaper for you I promise.

Let your flying do the talking - don't talk about your flying

Yeah, I'm Jonesing like a crack addict. Lucky for my heli it's a little windy or I might give it a shot. I've only got 8 flights under my belt, but I'm progressing so fast I don't want to stop.

Didn't people fly without a gyro just like 15-20 years ago?

Yes, but it's a whole different ballgame. You have to control the tail 100% of the time. Every collective input you give requires a counter tail input...and then there's outside forces like the wind to deal with. This is just hovering.

My memory is fading. But, I don't think I had a gyro in my American Mantis fixed pitch heli 20 somewhat years ago.

So answer is yes. But, you should also be aware how many flights were required to first setup the heli mechanically so it will hover with no trim. You then have to setup so that the tail pitch matches well with higher throttle setting. I'm sure the mechanical setup is easier with the computer radio with revo mixing. But, it will still require few flights to setup (probable more than the total of 8 flights you have accumulated)

Even without the revo mixing, you can do this with a throttle -> rudder mixing.

Good luck.

I'll probably listen to the earlier advice and keep the shiney new heli grounded for now. I'm seeing a JR770 in my near future.

HAHAHAHA Swoop. Wise words of encouragement. I think this is an excellent id. I'd love to watch... from a nice safe distance.

I think we should run a book on the flight time. Put me down for 3 seconds.

C'mon Crofty! Only 3 secs. Ye of little faith! HAHA!
I'll take that bet if your willing to part with a large enough dollar amount. Or how about A NEW GYRO!! The 770, or g401, maybe Sparton 760.
Who's in? I'll even let you adjust your flight time prediction.

3 seconds...Tisk,tisk...

Think of when RC helis were an impossibility for us mortals and only a handful of gurus mastered this black art (most here were born after those dark ages).

Then came the gyro.

It allowed people to start flying the epitome of hard-to-fly machines, minutes between tanks instead of seconds between crashes. It was then that people started to accumulate stick time and learn.

If you do experiment a gyro-less heli, you may of course (and most likely will) crash, but you will also develop a deep respect for the guys who did it in the pre-history of RC. You will see that flying modern helis is really a piece of cake.

Bruno.

Hey, the no gyro competition is a great idea! Think about it for the next fun fly your local club holds. You might actually get a few takers.
