Count one more with Stock Align ESC, GY401/S9650.
Very solid. However, I just do the occasional loops & rolls. No backward flight (which would put the gyro/servo through a much more demanding test).

now comes the hard part desiding between the 9650 or the 9257 they are both about the same price. I only see one drawback to the 9257 I would have to drop the volts to the tail. but it seems that the 401 wants 4.8 so i might have to do that anyhow. is any one running the 401 at 6 volts?

I run a GY240 on 6V with a HS81. Works great for my flying but it took me a while to get things like that, lots of trial and error.

Here is a snippet directly from the GY401 manual (GY240 is the same minus 2g)

GY401 Ratings
(Integrated sensor type AVCS rate gyro)
• Control system:
Digital advanced PI (Proportional Integration) control
• Gyro sensor:
SMM (Silicon Micro Machine) system vibration gyro
• Operating voltage: +4 to +6VDC
• Operating temperature range: -10°C to +45°C
• Dimensions: 27 x 27 x 20mm
• Weight: 27g (including connector)

My vote goes to the 401 and 3500g ---

stock align esc and motor -- no kick out with any collective dump :0)

You can only say that if you can maintain head speed during large collective changes. If not, the tail is going to swing out no matter what gyro/servo you are running.

Well that is if you dont know how to set up throttle / pitch curves or eun in idle. With 80% I get no kick with any pitch dups -- that sound better?

HI

A friend of mine uses 9257 futaba servo in 3D flight without stepdown directly connected on the stock align esc/bec. It works great!

And I use between one week only the hyperion servo HP-DS12-GCP. It works great in 3D flight too !!! for lower price; 34€, futaba 9257 is about 89€ !!!

The Hyperion DS12 mini gyro servo is a keeper!
Got about 4 flights on it today to test it out.

I was running 6v straight out of the Align ESC/BEC.
The rated speed @ 6v is .06 sec. I believe it.

Best bang for the buck right now.~$34 you can't beat it.

are you running the gy401 with the ds12? Was it hard to set up? They said its programable??

Thanks for the info.

I am using the Logictech 2100 gyro.
I just plugged it in, mounted the round arm and set the ball for 90 degrees at neutral (normal initial mechanical setup).
The servo will function as any normal servo without any programming needed.

The programmer allows you to do the following:
Change the travel range (extend it beyond normal or limit it)
Change the normal neutral center (without the need to use subtrim in the radio).
Change the deadband width at neutral (useful for ganging several together).
Reduce the servo speed.

Hi guys

For 34€, DS 12gcp works great!!! rated speed is 0.06s.

I run the gy 401 gyro with, and very easy to setup both. no need to step down voltage.
You can do pyroflips, funel, chaos, go backward, everything!

The 9650 and 9257 are the same servo save for the gearing. The factory only is trying to cover their collective butts because to retool for a slightly bigger motor would cost more than recommending a lower voltage limit. I and several others have been using the 9257 servo on 6 volts since they became available with no problems. If one were to use the 9257 on say a 500 for cyclic at 6v then there would be some problems due to loading. I highly recommend using the 9257 any day of the week over the 9650 because of the speed it offers. You fellows that want to upgrade your 9650, try obtaining some 9257 gears for your presently owned 9650 and you too can experience the benefit of a faster servo

The AMA is way better than what you belong to!

I know the 9650 is a proven servo for the -trex 450, but in my opinion, it looks out of place on the heli (too big). I had one on mine... What I think might be an excellent choice for size, performance, and cost is:

http://www.horizonhobby.com/Product...ProdID=JRPS290G

I do not have one of these, but for the money, I am going to order one. Specs look great. I just stumbled on it a few min ago and remembered this post, so I thought it was worth mentioning.

I currently run a 3400G and they are an excellent servo. But 2 x as much as this 290G and probably a better choice for a 500 class although it works great on the 450, a little larger though than the 290

Hitec's HSG-5084MG looks interesting - handles 6V without a regulator, and is rated to 0.05 sec / 60 deg., very small size.

http://www.hitecrcd.com/servos/show?name=HSG-5084MG

I have no experience with this servo, however.

Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups.

Has anyone tried the futaba s3156 MG or the s3153 MG on the tail? They are lite, work on 6v, .11 speed, and around 33 oz-in for the 3156 and 24 oz-in for the 3153. But what bothers me, even on the futaba web site. They don't mention if they have bearings.
