Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > OS61 - How hot should it get?

Howdy...

I have an OS61 in a Raptor (brand new engine). I've been breaking it in, and trying to keep it cool. I've read posts about folks keeping their engines really cool.

I'm using 30%, and have the engine SOOOO rich that it makes that '4-stroke' like sound all the way up to 1/2 throttle, smokin' like a chimney.

When I shut it down, the head is still too hot to touch. Is that normal? or should it be 'cool'? I heard 30% was cooler than 15%, and it's so rich that the gas tank is being used WAY faster than normal. Should it be so hot that it's hard to touch?

The Raptor has an aluminum fan, but all I was doing was hovering (so not too much airflow). At the same time, I was never above 1/2 throttle.

The instructions suggest that a long break-in is not necessary, and that all you need to do is run a little rich for the first few tanks. I've read other people who suggest much longer break-ins (like running a full gallon super-rich), and yet the instructions don't tell you to do that.

Sure appreciate your input on this.... Thanks for replying

Regards,

Ben

Don't be too concerned with the temp as normal is near 300 deg f it sounds like you are only slightly rich. It should "4stroke in hover a little bit but smooth out in climb . after about 2-3 gal, Lean it until it will not start to sag in a "hard" climb out.

The head is supposed to be hot!

Try putting your finger on the OS emblem on the side of the crankcase.

If you can hold it there for 4-5 seconds it's in the ball park. Any less and the engine is considered hot. Any more and the engine is definitely cool.

Take the reading right after you land and stop the blades.

This is a good rule of thumb (finger?).

Finger rule

I agree with Blair on the technique but I use a 2 to 3 second rule with 15% on my OS 61 with a Muscle pipe.

No Way, 300 degrees is WAY to hot. Keep it around 200 to 225. My YS .80 makes tons of power at 180 to 220 degrees. You run up above 250 your just asking for shortened engine life. Know one needs to run the engine at 100% output unless your in a racing situation. Buy a Raytek or a Exergen and use it if you can not tune by ear. Some experienced pilots can tune by sound, sight, or performance. Look at the glow plug, you can read a plug and learn a lot.

My rule of thumb.
1} Wire and surrounding bottom of plug wet, with like new shiny wire = rich side of optimum power 85%
2} Wire and surrounding bottom of plug starting to dry and wire starting to gray = Very close to optimum power 95%
3} Wire and surrounding bottom of plug dry, wire totally gray but not distorted optimum power 100%
4} Wire and surrounding bottom of plug dry, wire distorted = slightly lean DANGER!
5} Wire and surrounding bottom of plug dry, wire broken and distorted or burnt up = extremely lean possible engine damage!

Engine temp....

Howdy!!!
I use the 4-5 second rule (finger sensitivity) escept that I put my finger up into the backplate of the motor. I learned that trick from the "big cheese" Curtis Youngblood" himself....

Argue for your limitations and sure enough, they're yours
