Too bad...

He laid down some of the most recognizable pedal steel licks ever. It's too bad people don't realize the complexity of the instrument. Everybody thinks it's a hick instrument some lazy hayseed plays.

Anybody here ever tried pedal steel? You're using both hands, both feet, your knees, 3 fingers on your right hand and no frets for your left! Oh yeah, and you can even have 2 sets of 12 strings tuned in different keys if you're up to it. You're pressing 1 or 2 pedals or rocking between the 2 of lord knows how many pedals on your left foot to get that subtle sliding sound while controlling volume on your right foot while using your knees for raising/lowering other strings! i can play fiddle but i mess around with my pedal steel and start shaking my head! You get that pure, liquid, flowing sound that only the Pedal Steel can give you.

i hope others continue to be inspired by their work to pick up the torch and carry on his and Hank's legacy.

Sad news indeed but if you are a fan of Don Helms and have the RFD channel on cable or sat. look for the old Wilburn Bros. shows most of those had Helms playing and he played alot of very reconizable licks I had a double neck Emmons D10 it has 6 knee levers and 8 floor pedals not counting volume pedal. I took lessons for a year and sold it, I wanted to play it so bad but just couldnt get it. 4/6/10 half a pedal 6/8/10 a and b pedal OMG . It is amazing how Helms , Emmons, John Huhgey and all the other greats make it look easy . I would give anything to be able to play one but it is way above my musical skills .

Dang! maybe flying is simpler.
I remember out of high school i wanted to play an instrument, so i tried the bass. I figured 4 strings, and 4 fingers we are good to go. Well, after a about 6 months of lessons (more like therapy sessions) the tutor actually told me i have no talent. I was thinking that to. I can play the notes, but it sure doesnt flow. At least he gave me a good price for the bass!
