Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > Gyro Mounting

Today I just received the century pg3000 heading lock gyro (have been using the pg2000) and I'm not sure where to mount it. Should it be placed in the servo tray under the on/off switch, where century says to mount it or elsewhere? I thought that I read somewhere that the gyro has to be in line with the rotation axis of the heli (main shaft). Is this true?
Thanks.

With the new type of gyros, this is no longer true.

I used a old Miniature Aircraft gyro mount and placed it infront of the starter shaft.

Yes, the GYRO AXIS always has to be in line with the AXIS OF THE FUNCTION one wants it to control. But how far from the pivot point of that axis one locates the gyro is irrelevant, as it works on degrees of change not distanc of change. So one degree of yaw, is that same if measured 1" from the mainshaft (yaw axis) as it is if measured three feet from the axis.

In this case, the yaw axis is the rotation around the mainshaft, so the gyro can be located anywhere on the heli, as long as its' working axis is parallel to the mainshaft...be it attached to way back on the tail fin or closer, as in up front on the radio tray.

May I ask why you got the PG-3000 instead of something like the Futaba GY240?

Thanks for your reply. I will be putting the gyro directly under the on/off switch of the hawk pro.

And I got the pg3000 because I thought that as long as it does what I need it to and at a cheaper price than the futaba gyros, why not? Does the pg3000 not work as well as futaba's or what? Thanks

The Futaba gyros are Heading Hold type gyros. I don't know anything about the PG3000. The Heading Hold gyros help in keeping the heli straight, most especially when starting to do your first hovers.

I have tested the Futaba GY240 and found it worked very well for the price (not as well as the GY401/9254 digital servo combo) but better then the GY401 when used with analoque servos.

I now have the PG-3000 in a heli for testing but have not had a chance yet to finish the testing I wanted to do with it.

So let us know what you think after you have flown it for awhile.
