Are eyetops the best for the job when working solo or is there something better?

There are more expensive "video glasses", but dollar for dollar my vote is for the Eyetops.
One of the nice advantages over some other glasses is that they allow you to fly the heli by looking out the regular lens of the glasses then glance over to frame up your shot.
Just my 2 cents

My recommendation: don't use anything to line up the shot while working solo. Your attention needs to be on the heli LOS all the time. I used the "shoot and pray" method when I was solo, thats take alot of shots moving the heli itself around and praying for the right shot.
I had a set of eyetops and felt my full attention wasnt where it needed to be, your eye has to adjust and readjust so much its not safe.

I can't agree with the last poster, with my own caveat. And this was after three years of shooting 'blind' myself.
I would agree if you don't use a stabilizer. I tried it and it was way too difficult...I abandoned the idea after not being able to frame shot while the heli went off on a direction of its own choosing. Once I put on a Helicommand device, things changed. I can frame the photo safely, just takes a glance and a move of the tail. It only takes 2-3 seconds max. I don't do any up/down adjustment via tilt servos, just left right of tail or flying heli forward, backward, up or down to align. Much of that can be done, and should be done the convetional way by looking at the camera. Once you are close to where you thing you want to be, hover and glance at the video view and align. Works great, cuts down on wasted shots and you don't have to 'hope' you got a shot you want, you will know you got it.
There will be jobs you won't want to use the video if solo depending on the circumstances of the shot (my last job like that was a road shot in 30 mph winds).
The important thing is stabilization assist you can trust.

I shot for a long time solo without using a stabiliser, and it's certainly awkward, but not impossible. You need to keep your eyes on the heli the majority of the time, and then look at the downlink to see how the composition needs to be changed, then look back at the heli whilst you change, checking the downlink periodically.

With a stabiliser it's that much easier ...

PS. I use an old pair of Eyetops Classics mounted to a baseball cap to act as Centras (ie. the screen is under the eye):

the eyetops are alright but if you want a better solution i think the sharper image are the best, you have a screen on each eye but they sit low on the nose so you still have full view of your surroundings

How do you get a screen on each eye? do you need 2 sets of eyetops and take the screen from one of them and add to the other?

no Dude, the sharper image video glasses (Myvu)have two screens and as i said they sit lower on the nose kinda like grany yeglasses so you have full view of your surroundings and of corse you have the screens so you can watch what you're doing, unfortunately their website is down at the moment but they are by far better than the eyetop

I always wondered about those dual video goggles and being able to see around them. I thought they were more for FPV flying or a second camera person. I have a set of eyetops that work pretty well. I like the built in sunglasses to cut down glare when looking at the heli. I assume you wouldn't be able to use sunglasses with the dual screen goggles, right?

yea i always wondered about the myvu gogles my self,i just bought a set and received them yesterday, the picture quality is just as good as the eyetop but they're way better for ap since you can see in every direction as you're watching,

i havent done any ap but i tryed them on my ipod to watch a movie and i like them alot, theres no comparason, this thigns are great,i loaned them to my daughter and she like them so much that im going to buy a second pair just for her,

whats best about the dual screen gogles is that it doesnt hurt your eyes like the eyetop do because one eye is focused on the screen and the other is focused on the surroundings,

i payed $95 shipped for mine on ebay,i got the universal ones since i want to be able to use them on anything with a audio video output, they're perfect for ap in my opinion, heres the site, they have a simulation of what it looks like while you wear them, check it out

Solder a cable? or will it have the right attachment with it?
