I'm in the market for a new tail servo for my 600n. I'm Using the Spartan Gyro so i should be able to use either one of the mentioned servos.

Which servo would be a better choice. I've heard of some issues with the BLS251 and would like to know if they are cleared up now ?

The 8900g looks really nice as well, and is a little cheaper. Whoever has used booth which would you recommend ?

What were the issues with the BLS251?

I have run about 4 flights on my BLS251 and it is the best tail servo I have had. I can't compare it to the 8900g since I have never owned one.

The BLS251 is super smooth. I never thought I would feel a difference, but I did. I run it with my GY601, had the original servo with that gyro for 4 years, so it was time for a change. I can't be happier.

I have about 3 gallons through a BLS251/Solid G in my 600N without any problems. I have a Solid-G/8900G on my Stratus that is also working very well. They both hold like a vice without ever hinting at blowing out. I couldn't really tell a difference so I decided to save a few bucks and bought 8900s for my Vibe (Spartan) and Aurora (Solid-G).

I got a couple cases of fuel on my Caliber 90 equipped with the BLS251. It's a solid servo.

If you want some failure information to help you decide then I have a 8900 that has gone all twitchy and a guy I fly with had one do the very same thing. There are posts on RR from people who have fried their 8900s when used with a Futaba GY401 gyro.

I've got both, the BLS251 on my Spectra, and the 8900G on my Vibe. They both work great. I'd think that if a servo is going ot fail, it's in the high vibration environment of a gasser, and the BLS251 has been rock solid. If I were buying a new one, I'd probably pick up the 8900G, they seem to perform about the same, but the BLS251 is quite a bit more money.

Nick,

The BLS is indeed more money, but its motor should still be ticking right along long after the 8900's is worn out with its brushless construction. Even if it lasts only twice as long as the coreless motor does (well under Futaba's suggested longevity), it's still money in the bank, so to speak.

I'm sure that's true, but seeing how I've had tail servos last 5 years before I sold the heli they were in, I'm not concerned with life span. Hell, I've got some servos that are well over 10 years old that still work great. Longer life isn't a selling point on a servo, I've never had a brush go bad, it's always the pots or the board in them, both of which the BLS servos still have.

The really nice thing about the 8900G is you can use it with any gyro, the BLS is limiting.

True. It does depend on how much you fly. I start getting nervous with any coreless servo when I get to 40+ gallons of fuel, 25+ for coreless t/r servos. After that, they go in a trash can or to a fully informed sport airplane flyer for a nice price, even if they are still working "fine". They're still a ton cheaper than a major crash on a carbon model from a total failure.

There is that dilemma, though, between buying new to maintain peak performance yet risk a sudden (albeit rare) failure of the new, unproven gear verses keeping the older equipment that you know works well despite the fact it may be somewhat worn.

I've had a BLS251 in my scale turbine since they came out and it's been flawless thus far. I'm still impressed with how fast it is. Really amazing, actually.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I ended up with the Futaba BLS 251. Partly because I'm Futaba biased, and I'm excited to try out the new brushless motor servos. I will test it out tomm and give some flight reports.

I'm stepping up from a 9253 and the new BLS has a much more solid construction. It also feels a good amount heavier then the 9253.

Man Nick, you ain't kidding.

There's NOTHING I hate worse than brand new servos, gyros, transmitters or receivers for the first few gallons and regardless of mfg. If they make it through that, then all is generally well and good. I sit on pins and needles during those early days, though.

Nick, Ben, I'll third the infant mortality concern. Just had a month old servo go bad and stick at full tilt in the air. I'm fairly sure it was the brushes because it would work for a bit after a nudge of the servo arm (gears are fine). Working on repairs right now, the warp-speed piro auto at low altitude manuver needs work too

You made a good decision going with the 251. I have both servos. The 251 is in a 600N and the 8900 in a Vibe50. Both brands make excellent servos. I haven't had problems with either and I don't expect to.

Why did you go with the 8717's instead of the 451's for Cyclic/Collective? My 600N is all Futaba brushless. The Vibe is all JR (8717's for cy/col). I just like to stick with one brand in a single heli. Must be my OCD.

I like your choice of the Reactor X also.

I went with 8717's because i think they are the best value for the money. They are faster and have more torque then the 451's and were 99.0 from ready heli. I love the performance on those servos and on 6.8 volts the speed and torque is amazing.

As far as staying with one brand, I'm all over the place

Gyro- Spartan
Cyclic Servos - JR
Tail Servo - Futaba
Regulator - Scot Gray
Governor- Aerospire.


I support em all.
