Audacity Models Pantera 50 - Tiger 50 > Muffler for OS .61 and Pantera

I just bought a Pantera kit and am going to put an OS .61 in it (thanks John for the BBC kit). Now I am looking for a muffler for the .61. There are only a few options out there, but I am starting to look heavily at the Hatori pipes. I have seen that the SB 1, SB 10, and SB 15 can all be used on the the .61 with the SB-1 being made for .60 size engines and the other two working even though they are made for .90 size engines.

I noticed while looking at these pipes that the flange that connects to the engine is in a different place on each pipe. Since I have not begun the build process yet, I was hoping that someone has experience with these pipes on the OS .61 and can point me in the right direction as to which one would best fit the Pantera. I don't want to get a pipe that does not fit well or at all under the canopy.

Thanks for any help I can get,

Steve

Steve,

I don't know of "any" mufflers, which fit under the canopy. Even a 50-class muffler requires some trimming. Anyway, I would consider a 91 class muffler because it'll be more quiet and will subsequently allow you to later install a 70, or even 91 into the Pantera and use the same muffler. Beware however the Hatori with the large flange and four mounting bolts because it needs a healthy amonut of frame grinding for clearance.

My 2¢

I agree with John, the Hatori is probably going to not be a great choice for this application. I used a generic 60/70 size one piece muffler on my OS61 powered Pantera with a small flange like you'd find on a typical one piece 50 size muffler. It required minimal grinding of the frame to clear and provided the appropriate amount of backpressure for good power yet easy tuning. The inlet is towards thre front on this one.

John - I guess I should have clarified a little more. I did not expect to not have to modify the canopy at all. I Just don't want the muffler sticking out the front of the canopy (not quite that extreme, but you know what I mean). I also don't want to have to grind the frame too much, so maybe the Hatori is not such a great idea after all. You suggest using a 90 class muffler on the OS .61. Since I am new to glow, I don't want to make a bad decision that will affec the performance of the heli. Will a 90 size muffler fit on the OS .61 (with a little modding possibly) and perform well?

Marty - you say the generic 60/70 size muffler provided the necessary back pressure and allowed for easy tuning. Do you think that a 90 size muffler would be a bad choice when taking these two factors into account?

I am not trying to play you guys against each other. I just want to make the most educated choice I can when purchasing my muffler.

Thanks again,

Steve

Marty's advice about using a generic 60/70 muffler is good. I think Century has an el cheapo which works pretty well. I may be using one myself but don't rember what the source was.

clearance?

ok, so what did I do wrong?

I have my BBC Pantera yet to maiden sitting here next to me with the OS .70 and a Hatori SB14 mounted on, clearance seems fine. I've an 1/8" on the front side of the exhaust manifold, and the lower exhaust bolt just shy of touching the frame. With the canopy it looks like I'll have to do LESS trimming than with my .50 Hyper and the pro muffler.

Looks like I've got good clutch alignment, so what did I do wrong if everyone says I have to clearance the frame?

hmm, they looked a bit better (brighter) on my laptop. Well, let me know if you can't see it and I'll try again.

The pictures look fine though a closeup of the mounting flange would be an aid. Make sure to put the camera on macro if needs be.

I agree with John. Please post a close-up picture of the flange. I brought your side-on picture into Photoshop and zoomed in to 200%. The picture was pretty pixelated. It looks like the flange clears the frame, but a close up would be a great thing, especially since I have my eye on a Hatori SB70 right now.

appologies; had some network issues last night.

I had real problems using the macro on my camera trying to photograph corals in my reef tank, so I was trying 'auto mode', with not the best camera. However, these seem okay with macro. I also only cropped them instead of reducing the resolution in Gimp. It hadn't occurred to me you might be throwing them in a photo editor!

Thanks Max. Those pictures show exactly what I was lookng for. You are right. The frames are really close to the flange and the bolt but do not look like they touch. It looks like the bolt could even be replaced with a slightly shorter one or have the end ground off just for that little extra clearance.

Looks like the Hatori it is.

Thanks again for all the great information.

To the best of my knowledge, the SB 15 is the replacement for the SB14 that I'm running, good for .60 to .90 engines. I've read feedback that it makes good power for all those engines and it's quiet. Should have the same mount, but here http://www.zoomshobbies.com/Product...?productID=4075 it mentions shifting the inlet forward, so it will affect the canopy interaction. Honestly I'm tempted to try and sell my SB14, as they now have an SB70, specifically for the OS.70. (also rated .60-.90) and is described as 'best power', guessing it's not as quiet though...

I just placed my order for an SB70, so it looks like we are on the same track.

Now I just have to wait for it to get here on the slow truck from Montana.
