e-Electric General Discussion > SimProp 280bb ACRO motor in Hummingbird.

just got the SimProp 280BB Acro (7.2v) motor installed in my hummingbird, my stock motor was defective to begin with, at full stick the heli would only go up about 3 inches.

with this new motor installed, I can definately feel a difference in power and smoothness, once the blades are spooled up, another hair movement on the stick and its a rocket!

my problem is the tail will not hold, I have a Century micro piezo installed on the back of the heli by the boom, with the stock motor it held rock solid, with the simprop motor i can get a nice steady hover but as soon as i move the throttle up or down it spins.

stock pinion is 10T I was told to run a 12T with this motor...any other suggestions? i think im gonna go back to a 10.

I assume you are running the stock century hummingboard mixer/speed controller? If so, you just have a mismatch on your pinion. It is either mixing too much tail or not enough. If the nose is swinging to the right (tail left) then go up on the pinion. If the tail is not holding and the nose swings left (tail right) then go down on the pinion size.

I have not used the 7.2V version (only the 6V version sold by Hobby-Lobby). Let us know how it goes!

the motor says 6V on it, but all the places that i have looked that sell it, list the "ACRO" as a 7.2v motor.

yes stock mixer board.

it swings both ways, if i give too mucht throttle nose goes to the....right?
and when i let off, it goes the opposit way.

oh, well then run an 8 or 9 tooth pinion. The motor will thank you for it.

So what was your final setup YSRRider. I am going to be doing the same thing with my hummingbird.

Thanks,
Mike

Yes, I agree. When folks have a problem and "figure it out" , it would be nice if they share the information instead of just saying "I've got it figured out now...."

Simprop 280 bb

Hi,

I spent the extra and bought the team orion micro mod, I have also got the 280bb, but its sat on the shelf.....although the first 20 secs were good and full of power, the motor got hot real quick (using 1020lipo) and flight times were pants, also its massive and heavy compared to the orion, if you're gonna stick with the heli for a while, for great power and long flights, get the team orion! oh and loads of people here said use a 8 tooth, but i found an 11 tooth to be perfect great climb and duration, after 10mins the engine was still cool...not sure if the century and feda use different ammounts of teeth on main gear????

Sorry to hear about your problems with the 280bb. Tthe 280bb will work fine with the correct pinion. 8 or 9 teeth max on 7 cells or 2 cell li-po. I get 20-24 minute flights from this motor and 2x1200E-Tec li-poly cells. Lots of power and a very long life. Dozens of flights and the commutator still looks good as do the replaceable brushes.

I have no experience with the orion but am sure it is also a great motor.

The reason for different gears is that differenet motors have different constants (RPM/V). Generally if nothing else changes, a higher constant motor (more RPM/Volt) will require a smaller pinion. Whereas a speed 300 may need an 8 tooth, the 280bb can get by with an 8 or 9, the stock motor a 9 tooth (from memory - could be off a bit) and an orion a 10-12 tooth.

The century heli is a FEDA by the way

Have fun!

sorry.... here it is....

from what i have heard.... if you are using a Li-poly pack (7.2V) with the ACRO 280BB you want to run the 12 tooth pinion.

if you are using the stick bird seed pack (9.6V) you want to run matching pinions on both motors, 8T on main and the stock 8T on the tail, if i can find a pinion for the tail motor i want to try a 9T in hopes that that faster T/R speed will work better with the cheap piezo gyro.

I am using the plastic pinions from the Piccolo, on the main motor i put a drop of CA on the shaft and pushed the pinion on... it slipped off other wise, and should be easily removeable.

and I did just find that I had a 9T tail pinion, but the shoulder needs to be ground down so it will press all the way on, havent yet done this.....
let you all know how the 9T worked out....

I would rather find a place that sells the metal pinions instead, but im gonna make do with what I have.
