Safety Bulletin

BMFA SAFETY BULLETIN On REPLACEMENT ROTOR SHAFTS

"3rd party hollow rotor shafts have been failing when used on certain helicopters, allowing rotor heads to detach in flight.”

RECENT ACCIDENTS INVOLVING MODEL HELICOPTERS

In recent weeks there have been a couple of incidents of rotor heads becoming detached from model helicopters either in flight, or in a heavy landing. Whilst no injuries have been caused by these incidents, the safety hazard posed by such a failure is obvious.

In both incidents the detachment was caused by the failure of the main rotor shaft at the point where the head-retaining bolt passes through. The rotor shafts in question were NOT the helicopter manufacturers original parts, but “3rd party” parts. These rotor shafts are hollow, to save weight, and appear to have been hardened as part of the manufacturing process.

Whilst as a general rule there is no problem with such a design, there does appear to be a problem when they are used on Robbe Futura and possibly Millennium helicopters. On the Robbe Futura, the bolt retaining the head to the shaft is very close to the bottom of the head block. As a result, the leverage on the bolt is quite substantial. The loads imposed on the bolt, and the shaft that it passes through, can be severe, especially during “3D” type flying or in a heavy landing.

In both the incidents recorded, the shafts had fractured cleanly across the boltholes, presumably as a result of the loads imposed on them. The problem has not occurred so far on other machines, where the head-retaining bolt is further up the head block. Here, the leverage is a lot less, and there is more clamping action to spread the load. Nonetheless, anyone using a non-original, hardened hollow main-shaft is advised to inspect it regularly paying particular attention for any sign of fatigue close to the boltholes.

Anyone who has fitted a non-original, hardened hollow main shaft to a Robbe Futura or Millennium helicopter is advised to replace it immediately with an original manufacturers part.

Hollow Shafts

Thanks for the post!

I'm currently using a hollow Bergen main shaft in my Milli II ( I would assume Bergen is the manufacturer they are referring to).

Has anyone had a problem with these shafts in North America?

I would also like to know if it is in fact the Bergen shafts that are failing in the UK.

I posted on the Schluter list too; I have used the Bergen Hollow shafts for 3-4 years on Robbes and on X-cells before that. I've never had a problem. As Martin suggests; there are other manufactures making hollow shafts, though I sure would like to know WHO's products are at fault! Chris

Safety?

I appreciate the heads up,but, I think we should know who's shafts they are It would be more helpful so anyone who has that shaft could take the necessary steps to ensure safe operation.

It's also unfair to paint other manufactures with the same brush.
So,anty up fella!

I probably shouldn't go here; but it's a slow morning, and I'm waiting for the dew to burn off so I can paint- so why not???

Didn't the current US importer, several years ago (not long after he got the franchise, as a matter of fact), take a page from Irwin's book and get busted selling aftermarket clone Schluter mainshafts as the real thing?

Sounds like this is a re-curring problem. And if you can't trust the importer, who CAN you trust???

I have always admired and coveted Schluter ships. But I've never owned one for this exact reason- they (Robbe/Schluter) just cannot get a GOOD US distributor. I know, the current guy is leagues above what they had in the past. But I gather that if it wasn't for the efforts of Ron Lund, the Schluter parts availability situation in the US would be in a lot worse shape.

Even so, I was just about to the point of getting over all of that, and buying something I've wanted for a long time- a Futura SE. Then they decide to drop it; then they bring it back; then they drop it again; then they bring it back, but this time only the right-hand version. It was like watching a tennis match, for a while. And during all of this, not so much as a peep from Mr. Goldenberg. That tells me several things right there.

What a shame. Maybe one day...

Main Shaft

The main shafts used were not Bergen. From what I know, Bergen has never exported there after market main shafts for the Robbe machines. Also, Bergen makes the strongest main shaft on the Market. I used to fly a Bergen Intrepid and never broke a main shaft. I have bent them. Also, I don't think Ron would cary a main shaft he did not trust. There are also lots of sponsored pilot that are using Bergen aftermarket main shafts in there xcells, vigors and schluters.

Steve,
I think your sniffin to many paint fumes

Do you fly Robbe, what parts can't you get? the usa distributer is extremly reliable in getting all the robbe parts need in the USA. Parts for Robbe machines has not been and issue since Pica had the distributership.

yes new production items are slow to come buy.

Yes ,the distrubuter sold after market shafts and ALWAYS told the buyer these are after market and sold them for less $$ than Robbe brand shafts.

and Yes officially SE prodution has ended, I have a letter from Robbe saying so.

I am Mr. Goldenburg's voice, PEEP!

I think you can paint now the dew has lifted! next time use a resperator.

need the real info on Robbe USA feel free to contact me

Bergen makes the mainshaft Curtis was using at the world's. Scott Gray Products has an "exclusive" dist. with the Vigor mainshafts Bergen is making.

So, SGP hollow mainshafts are made by Bergen.
