Asked this on the other forum as well, with JR doing 2.4GHZ now, I'm failing to see what separates the two brands?

The JR radio (X9303) says (right on the radio face)

WITH SPEKTRUM 2.4GHZ DSM TECHNOLOGY.

does that answer your question?

Spektrum is wholly owned by Horizon. JR is by JR Propo of Japan, and is imported into the US by Horizon.

JR and Horizon/Spektrum have an agreement to work together. So the DX6 and DX7 are JR radios (662 and 7202 respectively) with Spektrum RF decks and Spektrum colors and labels. X9303 and 12X are JR radios, with Spektrum RF decks and JR labeling.

I think JR saw an opportunity to get their feet wet in 2.4 without taking a risk of screwing up the JR name. Once it was proven and accepted, they brought out JR branded products with Spektrum RF.

Any DSM2 Spektrum Tx will work with JR Rxs, and any JR Tx will work with any Spektrum Rx. Only incompatibility is the DX6 is DSM, and JR doesn't make any DSm Rxs, only DSM2.

Yep. To the end user there really is no difference.

Any differences are only meaningful to the bean counters and lawyers.

The old ones are red.

Also, not only is the NEW JR R921 case Opaque, it comes from a different mold.

At last... somebody who understands the situation.

A minor error there.... JR were about to do their own 2.4 GHz system but hit a legal technicality which prevented them from doing so. So had to get into bed with Spektrum/Horizon.

Also, I think you'll find that the DX6i only uses JR mechanical bits. I believe the software on that particular model is down to Spektrum.

I think the original deal was that the low-end and sports sets would be Spektrum, whereas JR would have the top end of the market. Certainly thats what seems to have happened in practice!

How long that deal will last remains to be seen....!

So,I am assuming you all are saying it is not worth the xtra money to buy the 9303 2.4gz instead of the DX7? I have an old JR 8303, which I think is real ez to program..Is the DX7 similar as far as that goes? thks for info..cutter

Do you mean an 8103? I had one of those, it was a GREAT radio! And yes, it's almost identical in programming to the DX7.

However the 9303, is light years ahead of the DX7/8103 as far as ease of programming and functionality. I'll never look back!

Cutter: depends on the functionality you want!

I used a DX-7 for quite a while, and its an excellent set for sport flying.

However, if you get a little bit more ambitious, you start wanting extra facilities, and that's where the DSX-9 / 9303 comes in.

As far as the radio link goes, they are pretty much identical. Its the extra mixing and model memory facilities (plus more channels) that make the difference.

It entirely depends on what you want to do with it!

Your DX7 is DSM2. There is a DSM2 logo on the lower-right corner of your DX7.

From the FAQ's at SpektrumRC.com:

"What is the difference between DSM and DSM2?"

Quote
DSM2 represents an updated version of DSM technology, making it possible to fly any size model with the convenience, safety and peace of mind of Spektrum. With DSM2, the total latency of your radio system has been greatly reduced, while the bit-rate has been increased. When combined, these improvements provide hobbyists with a faster and more locked-in feeling when compared to traditional 27MHz, 72MHz or 75MHz radio systems. In airplane receivers, DSM2 has provided a new opportunity when separating the two receivers. By providing superior path diversity, the DSM2 receiver can now see a broader RF environment. On the surface side, DSM2 allows for a faster and more precise feel on-track, making DSM2-equipped radios the most precise radio you will ever use.

The only aircraft radio from Spektrum that is DSM, is the old DX6, which was compatible only with the AR6000.

Even on my (old) DX7, which was one of the very first DX7's sold, its got the DSM2 logo in the lower right.

On the bottom just below the screen, it says, "DSM Technology" Thats probably where you're getting confused.
