Military donations favor Obama over McCain

Thursday August 14, 6:31 pm ET

Troops donate more campaign money to Obama than McCain, despite McCain's military record

WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. soldiers have donated more presidential campaign money to Democrat Barack Obama than to Republican John McCain, a reversal of previous campaigns in which military donations tended to favor GOP White House hopefuls, a nonpartisan group reported Thursday.

Troops serving abroad have given nearly six times as much money to Obama's presidential campaign as they have to McCain's, the Center for Responsive Politics said.

The results also are striking because they favored Obama, who never has served in the military. McCain meanwhile, is a decorated war veteran who spent nearly five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. The Arizona senator graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and had a 22-year career as a naval aviator.

Obama has opposed the war in Iraq and says he would withdraw combat troops within 16 months. McCain has been a steadfast supporter of the war, saying he would withdraw the troops only when conditions on the ground warrant it.

"Obama will work tirelessly to uphold this nation's sacred trust with its veterans, to ensure they are not forgotten after they return home and he will provide our troops with the leadership they deserve, as well as the support they and their families need," Obama spokesman Nick Shapiro said.

McCain's campaign played down the significance of the donations.

"John McCain has been endorsed by more retired admirals and generals than Barack Obama has military donors," McCain spokesman Michael Goldfarb said in a statement.

"We feel confident that many U.S. troops stationed overseas will support John McCain in the election this fall, but we suspect most are too busy doing the important work of defending this country than to make political contributions," Goldfarb said.

The report tracked donations of $200 or more. It found that 859 members of the military donated a total of $335,536 to Obama. McCain received $280,513 from 558 military donors.

Among soldiers serving overseas at the time of their donations, 134 gave a total of $60,642 to Obama while 26 gave a total of $10,665 to McCain. That was less than the amount received by Republican Ron Paul, who collected $45,512 from 99 soldiers serving abroad, the report said.

BTW Ron Paul smashed all previous donation records, AND won most of the debates according the text-in votes on TV (yup) so Bush should just hand over the keys right now!

We don need no stinking elections!

558 X 6 would be 3,348....Obama only had 859.

26 X 6 would be 156....Still not 6 to 1.

THAT MAKES PERFECT SENCE... im guessing the fewer who donated bigger amounts obviously have a better financial standing and can afford obama. more donated to mcain but couldnt afford to donate more..

As usual you are there with your "selective reading"...
and people gulp down what you say without checking it...

It says: "Troops donate more campaign money to Obama than McCain"

Which good old Lou has defined to 6:1 for those overseas

$60,642 to Obama while 26 gave a total of $10,665 to McCain.

Ok, he's a little rough rounding it off, but 60642/10665 makes 5.67:1 so 6:1 in round figures.

You are counting heads and not money to "prove" he's statement were wrong. Yet he made no statement about heads....the usual tactic and swallowed whole by those that cannot do the maths.....and that wasn't even very difficult maths to do....

So someones maths are off, yours Ron....you gotta make sure to take the correct numbers into the equation, **** in=**** out...

Slight reality check before you yap?

I tell you what...
(and this coming from a veteran)

Guys in the military are going to support the Republican candidate.
reason is, is that every single year there has been a Republican in office, everyone got a pay raise but like a couple of percent. It was often like an extra $100/month in your bank account.

This is not quite the case as when there is a Democrat in office, for example the Clinton days.

Id say guys in the mil are more likely to vote for the guy thats gonna more money in his pocket.

I think that if you have as many supporters (in the military) as you do supporting Obama, that says a lot.

BTW, I think John McCain is a douche. (and it shall be known that I have called only one other person in my whole life a "douche".

Also, John McCain ranks the highest on the douche-scale of those 2 douches.

Wouldn't it make more sense to vote for the one that was less likely to send you to war? I guess money is more important?

Once again, all the dummies look to the smartest dummy around (Ron Shill) to try to challenge me... but he failed you all...once again...

and that's exactly what McLame will do...he has a horrible rating from the DAV and the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Organization.

Ron, you've been exposed, ONCE AGAIN, as a desperate nitpicker who will do ANYTHING to try to disprove the hard undeniable facts I present...

In other words, you dont know Schit from Shinola...

McLame SUCKS when it comes to Veterans issues...he has the lowest rating of all 100 senators!

But you all go ahead and vote for the pro-veteran guy! LOL

Me. military. me. vote. Republican. UGG!

LOL

Here's some more homework for you Ron...

John McCain:Knowing Schit from Shinola
Democracy Waning wants to know if you can tell Schit from Shinola?

Some years ago I had a job that allowed me to travel throughout the world.

In between getting passports, packing bags and finalizing itineraries I got drunk a lot with my good friend Randy. Now randy had many pearls of wisdom to share. But his most memorable tip at that time was over shots of tequila and beer. Randy held out his hands filled with imaginary piles of crap and boot polish and said" Tony this is schit and this is Shinola. No matter where you go or how long you stay, you must know the difference".

Since that time I've stopped traveling and had way too many shots of tequila but the lesson still is with me. I hope it will help you too.

John McCain is he Shinola or just schit?

McCain was a war hero and some have suggested that being a war hero is not enough to be president, there must be more.

McCain says he knows how to win a war but he has never won any of the wars he's been involved in.

McCain spent 5 years as a POW. Well if 5 years in jail equals president then I have a nephew who should be king. No if you really want size up John McCain then look at his record.

McCain's voting record for veterans is feeble. He has a "D" rating with The Iraq and Afghanistan veterans organization. He has a 20% rating with The DAV the lowest rating of all senators. he has voted 6 times against veteran bills.

Obama has an 80% rating and a ‘B" rating for his votes.

(FACT! Look it up)

McCain has been part of the administration that has sent our troops into battle without their armor. They were sent into Iraq without a plan for getting them out. And then after squandering their mission John McCain along with the current administration refused to support the disabled returning troops or their families.

McCain has trumpeted his comradery with the soldier while all the time voting against them. - "He voted against an amendment providing $20 billion to the VA's medical facilities. [5/4/06] He voted against providing $430 million to the VA for outpatient care "and treatment for veterans," one of only 13 senators to do so. [4/26/06] He voted against increasing VA funding by $1.5 billion by closing corporate loopholes. [3/14/06] And John McCain voted against increasing VA funding by $1.8 billion by ending "abusive tax loopholes." [3/10/04]

This is not Shinola.

Mccain has the lowest rating of all 100 senators on veterans votes.

McCain is thought of as a great supporter of the troops by the low information voters. But then they don't know schit from Shinola.

Democracy Waning, Out!
