Oh boy....

Mike,
Don't tell me you actually tried that crazy stunt you told me about and strapped yourself to it and flew around the yard now did you?

Ok spill the beans how much did you lift with it?

Mike,

I'm guessing you got a gallon bucket under there and still missed the fire!

a gallon of water is only 8 pounds... maybe he got one of those two gallon Wal-Mart buckets.. that would be 16 lbs of water plus bucket wieght...

wow, that would be too much!

Based on the Vario Benzine........

which is probably what you used.......

at 1800 RPM main blades, +12 pitch........I would guess an additional 15 to 18 pounds over pod and boom weight. That is with a strong running engine and those 725's from Vario......total weight including heli was 28-30 pounds........

Please email me the answer if correct or not......let the other guys guess........James

i say 15lbs.
btw what part of the frame would be the more stressed from carrying such load, mainshaft bearings block, frame itself ?

Just curious as iam setting up a camera rig on a gasser.

24 lbs

Benzin/ RC230 - Performance test

Configuration:

Stretched Benzin Trainer with 90:18 gear ratio
25mm tail boom
SS tube drive system
Metal tail rotor gearbox
70" No. 421 Rotor blades
RC 230 Engine
Unleaded gas with Amsoil 100:1 Mix
Rotor speed 1200 rpm
Pitch Range -5 to + 14
Flying Weight 24 lbs (with added weight for test)
Loops and Rolls at 24 lbs:

To evaluate the performance of this package, lead bars were strapped onto the Benzin Trainer to bring the dry weight to 23.5 lbs. Out at the field the engine was fired up without any change to the pitch or throttle curves just to see what the added weight would do. The helicopter was first brought up into a hover. A few pop ups to get a feel of the weight. Yes it did seam heavier than its normal 14.5 lbs configuration. Response was good so nothing was changed.

The Benzin Trainer was then pushed into fwd flight. The feeling was very good so after a few circuits I lined up to do a loop. The first loop was done from a fwd speed of approx 40mph. The loop was large with a slight tendency to fall out at the top. On the following pass the loop was engaged with 3/4 stick and then was reduced down to about -2 over the top. The loop was effortless. The only noticeable difference was the sound. Those 421 blades really sound great while going around the loop. Roll were performed as usual with no apparent difference.

Ok here it is!!

plane Jane Benzin, older g23 with new 603 carb, 725's nothing special!!
I got a 2 1/2 gallon water bucket made up last night. Tried to weigh it with my fish scale and had to jerry rig it to read more than what was actually on there.
The scale was computed out and read real close to 20 Lbs of bucket and water. BUcket alone was over 1 lb. I fulled the bucket with two, 1 gallon water jugs and it was 5 inches from the top still!!
SO!!! thats 15 for the gasser fully fueled and 20 for the bucket and water.
I didnt think it would even get off the ground cause i was at over 3/4 stick and it was still on the ground. It started to pull it up and it actually got up around 15 feet and the damn thing started oscilating!! so I pulled the plunger but the water was too heavy for the servo, or it was out of adjustment or something. IT DIDNT DUMP. OK get it down on the ground and just spill the water. its now swinging around in the oposite direction as the heli!! It dumped about half the water out and shot up like a rocket!!! got it the rest of the way down and got it shut down cause my white shorts were now brown. It might not have been so bad if it were on a 15 foot line but it was only on a 5 foot line.
BUT!!!!! that is a total weight of 35 lbs. not gracefull, but it lifted it!!!
I figure anything over 1 gal is going to be a challenge!!! NOW that i know what it can do!!!

Oh and BY the way...there were three other witnesses there too to see the carnage of what might happen!!!!

Word of warning

When you get into those weights, there is a weak link in the Benzin
As a matter of Fact, Rusty is going to be testing it this week, because they ran into some problems hauling this amount of weight (20lbs load)...
What happens is the top pinion bearing gets real hot because of the amount of load on the whole system...The bearing is big enough, the problem is the plastic bearing holder... It cannot dispate the heat to the frames....It gets so hot, that it weakens the main gear, and causes main gear failure...
I figure the plastic holder is good for 10lbs extra load, and no more, unless you have a metal bearing block made....I'm hoping the test will confirm it this week...I'll let you know...Otherwise, be careful

Bill Meador

Mike,
I would like to know if your top pinion bearing is getting hot using the 725's, and the stock gear ratio with this amount of weight...We are using the 9.0 with the 800 blades...
Thanks,
Bill

Have you tough using a thrust bearing between the lower bearing block and the main gear gear ?
this would really help with the high load , i got that MA upgrade thrust bearing for my gasser and its a really nice piece of machinery .

WELL!!!

Just to let you know, I will NOT be using this bucket, or that much weight!! It was just too scary!!
It was more or less just a "see if it can actually do it!!??" thing!! AND NO Jason, they werent crash test dummies, they were maniquins!! So, there!

Bill, the benzin is stock with only a few upgrades, CCPM side frames with the 87 gear train. It is more my camera ship carrier and everyday flyer!! Its going to be what i model the 500 around when i get the shop done and get the big blades for it!! I think i might try and get something bigger than the 815's for that heli.

I do agree that there needs to be a thrust bearing in all helis!! Just one more thing to ease in the maintenance and ware and tare!! Does any one make a thrust bearing block for the Benzin????
