So in my scenario, I travel with three Trex700e's and 16 lipos at 6s. If they are 4,500mah lipos at 6s, they just barely fall into the guidelines for carry-on luggage.

Lithium Ion Batteries with over 25 grams ELC are forbidden in air travel

It seems that the 25 grams is per battery. And I'm assuming the number of batteries doesn't matter.

here's your answer TrackHead!
http://safetravel.dot.gov/larger_batt.html

Per their FAQ on this link it is 25 grams ELC per battery: http://safetravel.dot.gov/documents...d_batteries.pdf

Quantity of batteries in this link: http://safetravel.dot.gov/larger_batt.html
"You are allowed one larger lithium ion battery installed in a device, plus up to 2 spare larger lithium ion batteries. These are in addition to any smaller lithium ion batteries. For smaller lithium ion batteries, just follow the Basic rules."

Per this statement your allowed one pack per 700e and two spares for each. That's 9 batteries total.

the FAQ states you cannot carry the "larger lipo's" in checked baggage.
"Spare lithium batteries cannot be carried in checked baggage"
So your heli with a battery installed can be checked into the checked baggage in it's case, but your spares cannot?

So, assuming these are main motor batteries what about separate batteries for the Rx's? Can you install one Rx flight battery on each heli and carry two spares for the Rx as well?

It's just confusing as their thinking is the whole "device" operates off one battery where as we are probably thinking Main Motor, Rx and a Downlink battery.
Can we argue 3 separate devices for our heli's?

My battery packs are 3ea. 6s 8000mAh packs for main motor. So one installed and two spares. Each one maximum is their 300 ELC content.
Rx batteries - Duracell 4500mAh. 1 installed and 1 spare.
Downlink batteries - 1 installed and 1 spare

the smaller lipo's for Rx and downlink might fall under the "Basics" rule that they are referring to this is where we have to quote there words "professional A/v use" as opposed to helicopter "toy" in their eyes.

it just makes for a PITA

Seablade,

I was under the impression that big lipo's can't be checked, but can be carried on if under the 25g equivalent.

that's my interpetation as well from the FAQ. your larger lipo's can't be checked and have to be "carry on". It just makes for more items for a carry on bag when the airlines are seeming to finally be clamping down on the size limitation of the carry on bag or rather the number of carry on bags people try to bring onboard.
I've got enough problems bringing a Lowe backpack full of camera gear as carry on let alone more batteries luckily they've never ask to weigh it...yet

He didn't know they ran on nitro methane so he was smelling for gasoline.

That's the key point there. Airlines are paraniod as heck about gasoline vapor. Not just because the explosive hazard, but the chance that the passengers will smell raw gasoline in the cabin and become alarmed. The aircraft environmental controls cycle air throughout the aircraft, including the luggage compartments, for pressurization.

For nitros, I think the easiest thing, if you absolutely need to bring it on a plane, is to remove the fuel tank(s) and ship them to your destination. That removes all concern about fuel vapor, literally.
