What are the airport restriction on RC these days? I would like to take my TREX500 , 3 lipo packs,TX and charger aboard. It would be on a carry on suitcase along with personal items. In the past taking my sim TX and some lipos has not been an issue. I just don't want it being lost or broken by baggage handlers. Any problems with this idea.

Thanks
Luis

lots of guys are doing it from what I hear. we have 2 comercial pilots who take theirs in carry on , and many others have said the same E is OK but the nitro stays home.

ther only problem you will have in the 3 lipos, lithium regs only allow 1 per items and it needs to be installed in the item

Easy fix, Connect the 2 other lipos to a device like a watch, add some wires for good measure and pass it off as a battery powered watch.

Your better off to mail it to yourself. I travel alot trust me unless it is a 450 size case or smaller, baggage is going to beat the crap out of it. Your 500 is too big to be a carry on.

There is a 25 gram limitation on lithium.

With the price of carry-on's theses days it mite be cheaper to send it priority mail if you're going to be at you're destination for a week or so.

If the wings are traveling faster than the fuselage, it's probably a helicopter.

Lithium ion batteries rated over 300 watt-hours (25 g ELC) are forbidden.

Equivalent Lithium Content (ELC). ELC is a measure by which lithium ion batteries are classified. 8 grams of equivalent lithium content are equal to about 100 watt-hours. 25 grams of equivalent lithium content are equal to about 300 watt-hours.

mAh/1000 x V = wh

4500 / 1000 x 22.2(6S) = 99.9wh x 3 (1 in heli + 2 spares) = 299.7

or try

300wh / V / 3 (lipo packs) x 1000 = MAX mA per pack.

(V = 3.7 per cell)

I just traveld with my 600N the other day. I took it apart and put it in a hard case and checked it in. I took the fuel tank out and cleaned it very well. Everything made it safe. Now returning home I am going to UPS it back as it is a lot of bags to carry to the airport, and it cost dollars now to check bags in.

I don't see where they limit the number of batteries, only the size of individual batteries. Spare batteries are permitted in carry-on.

With the 25gm ELC limit equated to 300WH,

a 6S2P pack of 2200mah cells = 6 x 3.7 x 2.2 x 2 = 97.6WH

300WH (the limit for a single battery) is just over 1 Mega Joule

Was the heli completly assembled including the blades? Did you bring the blades on board?

I went on the same trip and same flights with my Caliber 450V. I had my bird, radio, spare blades, 3 lipos, and charger in the Align case. Went through security and on-board no problems on either end.

Also, this isn't the first time I've done this. The only stress factor is getting on the plane soon before all the overhead space is used up. The Align case is too long to put in the overhead end-wise, and takes a bit more room sideways.

My son flew back to Texas with two 600N Pro nitro heli's as checked bagage and Delta gave him a pretty hard time with them. It was just a good thing the guy inspecting them didn't know anything about them. He told him if there was even any smell of fuel anywhere about them they would not be going on the plane. He smelt everything about them, even the exhaust port on the muffler. After getting through with his inspection, the told him he didn't smell any gas so he let them go. He didn't know they ran on nitro methane so he was smelling for gasoline.

Yes they don't know squat. If they got anal about it they can give you a hard time. The flash point is so high. Pour some fuel on the ground and try to light it.
Gas is different but try explaining it.

I carry my radio often and have never been stopped but they have looked over it once or twice enquiringly.

The americans don't like rotor blades as they think you might try to take control of the aircraft with them....LOL. Funny when one guy told them thats exactly what he intended to do....well we were the pilots. (DUH!)

So you have problems with nitro.
Batteries should be ok if you stay under the limits.
Put your rotor blades in your checked in baggage.
Radio should be fine carryon. It's not any different than a cell phone really anyways!

Go to TSA.gov

Search lithium batteries. There are several links which explain what and why about these batteries. There are limits and most people don't understand them as you would and should. Remember it is always easier to fight a fire on the ground and not in the air. Air Canada lost a DC-9 and many lives because someone had to have a cigarette. Video cameras have caught on fire in flight with lithium batteries.

You'll be fine if you comply with the restrictions which aren't that difficult.

when I travel w lipos I keep them about 1/2 to 2/3 discharged state. I keep them in individual zip lock bags and I have had no trouble. I do take the batteries out of my TX...and store them in a zip lock bag as well.
