Manual shows this link having a gap on only one side, which goes towards the ball, but my links clearly have a gap on both sides. Any ideas. I dont want to snap the link sizer in from the wrong side and split the link. Neither side is noticably larger than the other so I dont know what to do.

Look at the outside of the link, there is a rim that goes around more than the other side. That is where you tell the difference, if you can tell the difference.

The short links don't have writing.

I kept looking at them and looking at them, and finally it seemed to be different. But I don't remember what was different.

yes both sides have two sections of the little plastic tabs and two blank sections (no tabs). The only difference I could is that one side had a completely smooth blank section. The other side had a little line or ridge but very faint. I went with the blank side and sized there.

The short links dont have writing on them, so you cant use that method.

The entry hole for the ball is slightly (very slightly :-)) bigger from one side than the other - the side with the bigger hole goes onto the ball first.
