This might be a silly question, but how to figure out what the motor draws for amps on a single flight?

any input is appreciated

Cheers

Curtis

When you charge your batt. pack after a flight. The amount you put back in the pack is the amps. used for the flight.

Get an Eagle Tree Flight Data Recorder.

Close, but not quite...

When you charge the battery after flying, note the number of amp-hours needed to fully charge the battery. Multiply that number by 60 (to get amp-minutes) and divide by the length of your flight in minutes. The result is the average amps drawn during your flight.

To get peak info (rather than average), buy an EagleTree recorder like Stan said. (Or one of the other in flight recorders that have come out since, but so far as I know, EagleTree is the original.)

Do I multiply both the amps, and the hours by 60 or just the hours?
and divide flight minutes into both again, or just the minutes.

If you could do an example that would be greatly appreciated.

Example time :D

Suppose I go fly my Trex 450XL for 10 and a half minutes (10.5 minutes). When I get home and charge the battery the charger reads 1750mah (1.75Ah) charged.

I multiply the charge amount (1.75) by 60 and get 105.

I take that number (105) and divide by the flight time (10.5) and get 10. So on average my Trex draws 10A - which I also know from flying with a recorder is about right.

(By the way, my Trex setup is quite mild and the actual current draw is a little less than the numbers I used above - most peoples Trex's draw quite a bit more!)

You can go with the hitech method of eagletree or lowtech(relatively) method with inline watt meter like Whatts up meter.

http://www.powerwerx.com/product.asp?ProdID=3809

This meter with a dean connectors double as a voltmeter to quickly check if the pack is charged or not.

For test setup, you just plug the device between batt and esc and view the power, avg amp draw, max amp draw etc. The only drawback is it will not store data.

Here is a quick chart for easy reference

4min flight (100% discharge) = 15c avg discharge
6min flight = 10c avg discharge
10min flight = 6c avg discharge
60min flight = 1c avg discharge

Just remember your peak can be as much as 2-3 times the average.
Also, for 80% discharge, devide above c number by 0.8
