Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > Problem with my new Hawk Pro-help!

After several flights I finally got this baby dialed in right. It can actually hover hands off the sticks for a few seconds. Very nice.
Now something weird has started and I'm not sure what is causing it.
When it starts to lift off the engine suddenly quits and the tail rotor stops spinning immediately. The mains of course continue spinning until they stop. When I restart it everything seems normal, the tail is engaged properly but when I spool it up the same thing happens: engine dies and tail stops, immediately. The tail rotor is supposed to continue spinning after the engine stops but this is not happening.
I did have to reset a grub screw in the tail (on a collar ahead of the forward bearing) after my initial starups last week. I tore it apart last night after the stalling began and everything looks fine. Checked all the pinions in the main gear area and they appear fine too.
I have also leaned the engine a few clicks but the stalling on spoolup continues. This has me really confused because everything was operating fine before.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Unless you have upgraded to the constant drive tail system then the tail rotor on a Hawk will stop rotating when the engine dies.

As for the engine. Have you checked all the normal things? These include ensuring there is no leaks in any of the fuel tubeing and that the manifold presure pipe is well connected. Have you checked to see if the clunk line in the main tank has perished? Have you tried changing the plug?

Thanks for the reply. The problem was the glow plug. I put a new OS #8 in and all is well. The engine is nearly new but the plug in it was shot from breakin I guess. All plumbing was new and solid.
This is my first Hawk Pro with a shaft drive so for some reason I thought it had a constant tail drive incorporated in it. Thanks for the heads-up, I didn't know it was an option.
All is well now, thanks for the help!

tisrich,

If you burnt the plug that fast, chances are you are running the engine too lean.

Besides the great info here in the Century forum I found this review/setup info very helpful as this was my first Hawk pro. Take a look here eddo22:

This is where I found out I was missing the grubscrews that hold the pins for the tail gears,

The intermediate gear mod is a very good 1 to do and changing to a constant tail drive while your at it is even better

Hey Century start making a Raven 30 again !!!!

maybe start producing a new line of 30 LIKE A "Ninja40"

.40 toki engine & pipe
570 main blades
Eccpm or mccpm option
Constant tail drive

Hey BladeMaster thought you had it with Century...

Good riddance.

From almost day 1 the kits have had nothing but issues and Century doesn't seem to want to correct any of it.
If it isn't the intermediate shaft cutting in half it's one of the tail components that fail and if it isn't one the above it is there so called upgrade parts that fail.
Metal one-way fan is garbage only lasts for a season if your lucky and you can't buy a replacement bearing either.
Their all metal heads suck not 1 good thing about them .

I have finally had enough of Century's crap heli parts.

If anybody wants several thousand $$$ worth of parts for cheap keep your eye open on EBay as I will be getting rid of all my Century $hit very very soon.

Good bye and good riddance Century !

Anyways I'm tired of banging my against a wall that Century built
Time to move on to something else.

I recently built a 600N super pro for a friend and the entire build went off with out any need for mods or grinding.

I realize that Align doesn't use the same quality bearing as Century but at least when you buy parts from Align you get more then 1 piece !

Why dont you ask align to make a .30 for you

Enjoy the hobby.
