Radio - Futaba FASST > Question for 9Z owners!...

These questions are for old-time 9Z users.
I am currently trying to figure out how to use one and came up with several questions.
Here are the 2 that confused me alot...

1.Throttle trim is on the elevator side. Friends told me that Futaba did this on purpose for some safety reason or etc. Well I don't care about what Futaba thinks but I cannot get used to this. Is there a way to switch it back to what we call normal?

2.Kind of stupid but after spending about 2 hours, I couldn't find the Expo menu. Where the heck is that?

Well, I know it is an old radio but it came to me from a friedn who went out of the hobby and it is now mine.

Hope to find an answer two these questions...

Thanks

Any trimmer can be set to any stick. It's in the Mdl/fnc menu. Set J1 to T1, J2 to T2, ect.

Expo is set in the CND/AFR menu. Push the next button.

Hey man,

Thank you so much. I found the Expo))
Could you be more specific on your trim answer please? Where do I go to set J1 to T1. I am new to this radio.

And Could I also ask if there is a trick to remove the antenna?
I need to replace it and it won't come off by unscrewing it...

Many thanks...

Just pull real hard on the antenna - it will come out.

Just kidding

The antenna dosn't unscrew. You need to disassemble the case. Try the two silver screws on either side of the antenna - I think the top cover will come off. I haven't had mine apart yet.

Trimmers:
From the Home screen:
Push "P"
Push "K"
you are in the Function menu.
Notice on the box above "ELE" J2 (stick) is set to T3 (trimmer).
Press select "O", then press "F" for the elevator function.
Now press "Q" for TRM. Select wich trimmer with "E" through "I".
When done press "N" for end.

You'll figure it out from there.

It is an awsome radio - just need to learn how to program it.

Do a search on the 9Z on the internet. I recall seeing a manual online for it, also a tutorial on how to disassemble the case.

To replace antenna:
-remove module
-remove battery
-look in battery compartment, there is a hole at the top.
-use an allen wrench to hold the bolt found in the hole.
-hold the radio antenna up, unscrew antenna. Keep the bolt pushed upwards into the radio, do NOT let it drop out.
-screw in new antenna while holding the bolt.

If the bolt drops out, you'll need to completely disassemble the radio - which is NOT easy. You may want to use some glue to fix the allen wrench to the bolt.

There is another forum where a guy without fins did a video on how to program the 9z. Also go to Futaba's web sit and download the adendum. IT is by bar the easiest reference. If I remember right to change the trim go to the function menue and reset t1 and t3. Expo is on the next screen the screen where you set the servo limit.

It is a very powerful radio and once you get the programing down it will make sense. I have since sold my 9z's and moved to the 12. Check out the video I mentioned.

Now that you have the instructions on making the changes you want, you see why this radio is much more versatile than the JR. You can't do these type things (as switching trims) on JR radios.
Now, the reason that the throttle trim was opposite from the elevator trim is for both planks and helis. When you are in forward flight in idle modes, you can adjust elevator trim without having to take your right hand off the transmitter. Throttle is set and now you can adjust with that hand while still flying the model. As you have seen though, if you are not used to this, it can cause issues, especially on the ground if you have a buddy come up to help out and he doesn't understand that you have cross trims, well funny things happen.

You don't have to disassemble the case to change the antenna. But, you do have to be extremely careful that the screw that screws into the bottom of the antenna doesn't fall into the case.

Remove the battery and identify the screw. Then, carefully hold the screw in place with a small screwdriver while unscrewing the antenna. You MUST continue to hold it in place while you remove the old antenna and place the new one in the hole. Then, while holding pressure on the screw, screw the antenna down and tighten it good.

Hope this helps. It is very doable, just take your time and be careful.

Fritz is correct. It is an allen screw. It has been so long I had forgot that. I didn't use the glue, but is a good way to prevent dropping the screw into the case.

Thanks man again. Trim is DONE!.. With all these steps above, it would have taken me couple years to figure it out

And thanks to all of you guys. I will mess with the antenna hopefully when I get home tonight.
And I will look for those online instructions as well...
It is good to know that there are still people that know and use this radio.

I will most likely buy 2.4 GHz module for this one...

It's an awsome radio. Once you use one you'll always remember how to use it.

On the antenna, put a piece of double sided tape (or loop a piece of tape) and use that to hold on to the screw when removing the antenna.
Also, if you get to the point of having to remove the board, I HIGHLY recommend sending it in. Those ribbon cables are extremely fragile. If you have a tool, it can be done, but the actual tool that Hobby Services uses doesn't get lent out or distributed.
