The IR module that is connected between the ESC and the RX has to be switched to PCM after programming the ESC. The manual says this bypasses the IR Module. Can I therefore leave this IR module off all together and just put it on when I want to reprogram the ESC?

Yes.

Switch to IR to program and switch to PPM to fly.

OR leave it off alltogether and just reconnect to program.
