Synergy R/C Synergy N9 > What's new in the N9 (parts)

Hey,

I've been out of the flying game for a while and had a few questions.

I have the earliest version of the N9 and wanted to find out what was new in terms of new/better parts. I'm not so much interested in upgrades, but if it makes it less likely to explode in the air, I'm all for it.

I've been reading around about an SE that is due to come out, what upgrades / new parts have you guys found to be worthwhile?

I fired up the N9 this weekend for a few flights, and it felt pretty good. This machine has very little time on it (less than a gallon) so I wanted to see what some of the long time flyers had to say.

Check out the SynergyRC web site for the two engineering upgrades. One uses a longer ball on bell/hiller mixer (hiller side) to prevent the link from popping during excessive pitch and cyclic. The other change deals with the links from the flybar carrier to washout. This just helps with binding at extreme throws around the swash and washout.

The other new and now stock parts in the kits are beefier main blade grips, thicker landing gear, hard clutch shaft, double bearing support for the seesaw. I think the longer SE tail hub will be provided in the kits but I don't know when.

Aside from what Chuckie mentioned, there are a few popular (but largely unnecessary) upgrade parts:

* HyperHub or SE Hub: A redesign of the fan hub, one from Synergy, one aftermarket, both clamp to the shaft and reduce any fiddling required to dial indicate the engine. Only useful for people who don't like to or are bad at dial indicating.

* Hypercollar: This is the main mast collar, just below the bearing block. It's aftermarket, and is a clamp style, rather than set screw. The benefit is that it stays tight to the shaft instead of loosening up over time. Another advantage is that it doesn't gall up the main shaft - making replacing the shaft easier when the time comes.

* Hyperdrive: Again, aftermarket. This is a modification to the tail drive, and has a one-way bearing on it. It's supposed to run with less runout than the stock tail drive assembly. It's slick and elegant - but I have no idea if it's an improvement over the stock.

* Various main grips: The first plastic grips supposedly were a bit problematic for some. There are various metal 'upgrades', including the SE grips from Synergy. The "new" plastic grips fix the issues with the first plastic grip design.

* "Bonta Head": A flybarless head and grip set designed for the N9.

* Washout arms: Metal to replace plastic. Supposedly they develop slop slower than plastic arms.

* SE Bellcranks: Bling. I can't think of any real advantage to them.

* SE Head button: Bling. But I liked this one...

* SE anti-rotation guide: Not sure if it's bling or not, but I'm willing to bet that it is.

* SE thumbscrews: Smaller diameter, is supposed to be easier on canopies with holes that aren't perfectly centered.

* Tail grips: The stock plastic grips have been dinged for "coning" in flight, so various upgrade grips, including the SE grips, added an additional radial bearing to tighten the grips up.

* Tail hub: Longer tail hub is supposed to solve problems people were having with tail grips flying off of the hub mid-flight.

* Canopy: The first canopies didn't have a hole for the power switch. Newer canopies do.

* SE Engine Mount: 3 Parts, center, and 2 sides. Supposedly changes the harmonic of the engine to the frames, reducing fuel foaming. Also shiny.

EDIT: Added SE engine mount.

Thanks, I read through the Synergy site, but the text and part numbers are hard to picture without diagrams.

Which upgrades are essential?

I wasn't sure if the longer hub was compatible with the existing grips. I didn't want to drop another $150 for the upgraded tail.

Essential =
The long ball on the mixer (for the reason I mentioned in my first post), tail hub KIT (which work with the stock plastic grips), and main grips and landing gear (for flying in the cold).

Get the tail hub Kit which comes with two radial bearings, two 0.2mm shims, and two special screws. The new radial bearings go outside the thrust bearing and the shim is in between the two. There is a diagram somewhere on Synergy's web site. You don't need to upgrade the entire tail assy, stock slider and grips work great.

I would add for me essential includes: newer hub, collar, Hyper arms. It is easier to work on the heli with the hub and collar. Saves a lot of time especially when working on the motor or main shaft.

I have to admit - I've got a bunch of the bits, and I know it probably doesn't make much of a difference to my flying.

The flybarless head is neat, from both a appearance and technical standpoint - but boy is it expensive.

I just don't think I'll be to a skill level where I'd care for a while...
