e-Electric Motors & Controllers > Hot Motor and Battery after flight.

I have a Trex 450 se with a 430xl motor and a stock ESC, 12 tooth pinion, 2170 FP battery. The motor and the battery are pretty hot after a 6 min flight of just hovering and a little fwd flight. I have the timing set to mid but I still get a little bogging when I give it full +8 degrees of pitch. I have been told to set the timing to high and it will give me more power but it already runs hot. The motor gets hot enough where you can only put your finger on it for about a second. Any thoughts? I have read where people have the same setup and have plenty of power and everything is running cool. I am new to the electric world as I have a Raptor 50 with an os 50 hyper and it rocks with not even a hint of bogging. I know that it will not have the same power but my little trex bogs with just trying to punch it full up.

What Pack is it? Size and C rating.

How hot? My batteries are typically 140F after a flight, a little warmer if really working the model hard. My inrunner motor runs about 140F and my outrunner Hacker on my Razor runs at 190F! My Scorpion on my Furion runs about 135F after flight. These temperatures are pretty much normal from what I've heard from other pilots.

It is the stock align speed control. I was thinking of upgrading to the Kontronik 40A.

Before buying the Kontronik, find out the right timing for for that 430xl motor. Your right on the border line with 140 degrees on the batt. The discharge rate on your batt. are fine.

I will have to check to see what the recommended timing is for the 430XL motor.

6min is a relatively long flight time (50% longer compared to hard 3d flight). What is the pack voltage after the fligt (5min cool)? You want this to be 10.8v abs. min. to 11.1v. Pack will work extra hard toward the lower end of the voltage to provide same power level (more current).

Check the pack condition and voltage after a 4min flight. Align 430xl outrunner (although it looks like a inrunner) and most other outrunners will be happy at mid timing advance.

pack voltage is 11.1v, I am just concerned about the hot battery and motor.

If your pack is 11.1v after a 6min flight, your avg discharge rate is less than 10c so I would not worry about it. I would start to worry about it when the velcro for mounting starts to slide due to heat.

Based on 11.1v, your average discharge rate is about 8c. All packs will get warm to hot in heli use.

Is the bogging normal? It is not bad but there is a pretty good drop in RPM when I pull full positive pitch. I am worried when I start flipping it around it will not have the power to stay in the air.

Outrunners like to run with mid timing. See if it is improved with ESC setting. If it does not improve, I suspect the health of the battery pack unless it is a new pack.

do you run in heli mode or airplane mode on the esc?

The difference between airplane mode and heli mode is the slow spool-up.
Although you can run it in airplane mode, I suggest you run it in heli mode only. The difference is the throttle delay with heli mode.

I will change the setting when I get home and see if it helps. Thank you for all your help.
