yeah, i would say that there is some rubbing going on from what it looks like, but it also looks a little like its been running lean for a while too... might as well check your bearings too since you have it apart.

In the pic of the engine parts, I would say you have been running lean. What fuel are you using on it?

If the crank case is still okay, change out the parts and run the engine again. As az mentioned, check on the bearings and replace if necessary.

looks like with the sleeve that color and the piston having that white tintish color that it was run lean for a while too, can even see on the piston there it was rubbing on the sleeve and wore through the ring from being too lean...

after you rebuild it, set it all back to factory default needle settings and start tuning it my doing full collective climbouts... you want that engine to almost start to 4-stroke when it has a load on it, thats how i tuned my 50-hyper and to this day after i couldnt tell you how many gallons on it, the thing looks brand new and runs that way too...

Hi everyone

I just don't remember when or if i ran it lean. I guese it is possible that i ran it lean when i first baught the engine 2 years ago. I just put new bearings in 2 weeks ago. I figured that was the cause of my engine power problems. I remember the engine being in great shape then and no noticable problems with the piston or sleeve. I have not over leaned it since then. Is is possible i did something wrong when i put the engine back together or maybe the ring was on its way out. The second pitcure was my heli 2 days ago. There was 100+ degrees and still all that smoke.

BTW, Looking at the pick, the bottom part of the sleeve looks that way only because of the lighting. There is a small amount of wear if you look REALLY close on the exhaust port side. Otherwise, the top part is the entire color of the sleeve

Notice how the piston looks good on the other side, also a better pitcure of the sleeve

remember when you put it back together to torque the headbolts proper and that thing should be right back to new again!!

I make it a point now that if I am replacing the bearings to change the ring as well, what is another $20.00 to take your engine back to new again?

I am just dying to see if that cures your problem!!

Rich, did you use 600grit sandpaper, 320grit emory cloth, or a brake hone for the sleeve? I have read of all 3 being used. I am thinking of going and grabing some 600grit sandpaper tomarow from ACE for honing the cylinder. Also, should i clean up the piston also?

I used 600 grit sandpaper and triflow to hone the cylinder,it doesn't take much just to scuff it up.

and yes clean the piston as well,I had some engine cleaner that somebody gave me and the piston came out like new.
(I have no idea where you can buy it but the bottle was from cheveron hobby,I don't even know if they are around anymore but 30 minutes soaking in that stuff and the psiton looked like new!!)

Maybe something like carb cleaner would do the trick?

I got to tell you guys, if this doesn't work i am thinking of going swift/a123 cells. I really love electrics and am seriously concidering selling of my raven, the hyper for parts alonf with the mp5.

Those a123 last 500+ cycles, are not very expensive, and have the ability to charge in 20 minutes or less with the right charger.

Well here is the deal everyone. I put the new ring in. Everything looked goog to go. I got the engine back in the heli. At first it seemed to have great power to weight buttt then it happen. I here a loud scraping noise probly coming from the engine. I back off on the throttle and the engine stays running. when i go back to idle it dies. I go and check oove everything. All is good. The clutch is spinning freely and the engine seems to be in a good working order. Now it will not even start. I am done with this engine. As a matter of fact i am done with nitro all together. I am going to grab a swift from heliworld after i sell off my raven/muffler/engine(engine for parts ofcourse). I am going to go the a123 route. Thanks for all the help everyone.

Sometimes you just have to say enough is enough!!

It's time to move on and try something different, nothing worse than screwing around with a heli over and over again and not being able to fly!!

I have 10 gallons of fuel left and when that's done I am going all electric as well,I have an evo 90 that I have flown maybe 6 times this year due to vibrations and the engine running bad just like your hyper 50.

I finally have it figured out and runs o.k. but in the mean time I have racked up well over 90 flights on my mini titan e325!!

Have you ever considered converting the raven 50 to electric?

I did some searching and there are a few falcons out there running electric, the raven 50 fly's so well I bet it would be a monster on an 8's pack??

I actually traded the my Raven for a hurricane 550. I grabbed a dewalt 36v battery pack of e-bay. I also grabbed and a123 charger. In theory, i can charge this packs in under 20minutes. The grand total was about 250bucks. Not bad. I took apart the engine. The liner was a goner and the piston and ring really went this time. Only about 75% of the ring was actually still there. Some of the piston was also gone.
