e-Electric Motors & Controllers > is the CC Castle Link needed for airplane use?

i know this is the Heli forum, but i figure who better to ask, especially since i have learned more from you guys than any of the airplane forums put together.

as i get more and more into the electric world, i find myself buying more and more stuff that'll help me get into the Heli world when i am ready.
right now i am buying the CC Phoenix 45 amp ESC for one of my 3D electrics planes..........i know it comes with factory preset features........is there anything i need to do that would require the Castle Link software for programming?

thx
mike

The presets, are not really presets. Factory defaults.

You don't need the link for anything except firmware upgrades, but it sure makes programming easier. Even if you just want to change the brake and cutoff settings the link will save you time, but you can program with the transmitter if you don't mind counting the beeps. (I've done it enough times to say it gets tedious really quickly.)

thx.......i read about how to do it with the Tx, sorta made my head spin just reading about it.
i already ordered the link.........i figure that when i get my first Heli towards the end of this year it'll be something i would kick myself in the head for not having, so no beep counting for me

The Link also allows access to settings not avaliable with manual setup! And allows custom settings as opposed to preset numbers!

What GaFlyer said is very true if you want to use the governor mode for helicopter flying, but for airplane use the available presets are usually adequate unless you have a variable pitch propeller.

OK i got the 45 today.....this thing is way cool...........question, after installing the link software, it's asking me to update the firmware........do it, or leave it?

not sure what it is right now, or how to tell.
