Remember to check your tank hose at least every 6 months.

Excellent advice Mark, I had a line deteriorate and fall off the nipple inside the tank while inverted. I had just enough energy to get it rolled back over and auto in with very minor damage. This happened after 6 gallons of fuel. The engine was a OS.32 . I have heard that the exhaust gasses used to pressurize the tank will rot the line. The gasses contain Nitric Acid this breaks down the fuel line. Higher nitro fuels will produce more of the byproduct nitric acid. YS engines do not have this problem since no burnt gas (nitric acid) is released into the tank. Kind of the same reason your fuel line used inside your fuel jug is not affected even when exposed or submerged in fuel for years. A very good point to bring up with winter maintenance being performed.

I agree. Changing fuel line is CHEAP insurence. As opposed to the results from not doing so.

AHHHH Thats why...

Thx rickc,

I was wondering why I have good fuel pickups... been flying the Freya with YS 61 for a year with the same tube. and (this is no joke) the fule lines in my field box and to my pump are 7 years old and show no signs of deterioration!

Cheers

FUEL LINE

Hi,

Every 6 months is a very good idea.

I would like to add a few more.
Don't forget the header tank. It is always soaking in fuel . Also change fuel filters too(by carb. and muffler). Sure some of the filters out there are clear so you can see inside of them. Can you see clear plastic objects, a clear like gel /oil gunk ? Not really unless you really pay closely attention to it.
When replacing fuel line in the tank check to see how clean everything is inside their.

It is no fun at a fun fly /contest and having engine problems when it is as simple as a filter. The cear like gel gunk plugging the filter. I know I have been there. It really sucks.specially when it was running just fine last weekend.

Happy flying and have fun doing it.

Bert - i think why the lines survive in the field tank is they are not exposed to exhaust (if you use muffler pressure) and most of the time are not exposed to air. Just my guess - my fuel lines in my 1-gallon container are over 3 years old and are ok.

RCL

Exactly RCL! I was responding rickc's post about the YS (wich I run) and the fact that the nitric acid in the exhaust gasses breaks down the fuel line...

It was more like "Ahh, now I understand" not a question... sorry

Cheers

Ok Mark,

So tell us the whole story.
Did you have a flameout because of it?

No flameout but the last flight seemed to be a bit on the lean side and now we can see why. The hose had cracked in half at the inside tank fitting and started sucking a little air. I had noticed that the tank hose was becoming limper and limper during defueling so I was sort of expecting it.

Tank Hose?

Thanks a great reminder Mark, I change mine as a matter of maintainence as well. I have a question though, what is the shelf life of unused fuel line? Should I buy in bulk to save a bit "O" cash? Or would the line get old just hanging around?

Buying in bulk or a drum is not so good unless you can transfer in into gallon containers. A drum will draw moisture and ruin the fuel. Shelf life is a long time if stored in a cool place out of direct sunlight and the jugs seal air tight. Save your old gallon jugs. If you buy a drum transfer right away and the fuel will store much longer.

I had a hole in my clunk line on the Raptor 30. It was giving lean engine runs and wasn't reponding to carb needle adjustments. I couldn't figure out what it was until 2 flights later. It was on a new engine and fortunately it didn't burn it up. Whew!
