Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > Finally crashed my Hawk !

After almost two years of flying at least one day a week, at least 300 flights and one or two cases of fuel my Hawk Pro 50 went down on Sunday. Yes Oldfart not a real Century Heli but one sold by Century UK.

I'd had a great day on Saturday and was really feeling in the groove on Sunday when I lost drive lowish and inverted. Got it down reasonably well, all I done was to bend the tail boom and feathering spindle. Main shaft and blades were good to go as was the tail drive shaft. However the heli had 'eaten' the main gear, lay shaft and upper side frames. The clutch had spread and jammed solid where it oversped before I got throttle hold on.

Cause of arrival was a failed upper layshaft bearing. It had siezed, moved in the frames (melted) and taken a couple of thou off the shaft dia. After so many flights with a head speed around 1950 on 620mm blades I don't think anybody can complain. Yes I know about the three bearing mod or adding two extra 11mm OD bearings. Mine was stock and will go back stock.

All parts have been ordered today to get her back in the air for later in the week or next weekend. Bring on the next 300 flights with this cheap, reliable, fun machine.

To bad about the crash but its kinda fun to rebuild after so long and you get to re tweak everything. What and where did you get 620mm blades to fit the hawk 50 blade grips?

If it doesn't fly sell it!

I am confused by your remark "Yes Oldfart not a real Century Heli but one sold by Century UK."

I have always considered the Hawk 50 that is sold in the UK by CenturyUK to be a "real Century Heli" because it IS manufactured by Century USA....even if it is not sold here in N/A as the Hawk 50.

It is the smaller helis, that CenturyUK buy from OTHER manufacturers and sell in the UK (that many mistakenly think are in fact Century USA product) that I do not consider to be "real Century helis".

Just keeping everything clear.

P.S. If you like the Hawk 50, you would find the Raven 50, that is sold on this side of the pond to even be better. And on this side of the pond it is only marginally higher priced.

As you can see, the Hawk 50 is a great and durable 50 heli, but I consider the Raven 50 to be much better.

Dilbeck, I run NHP blades and like them. I an sure the SAB's also fit.

Oldfart, just joshing with you . I also have a Falcon SE in my fleet, which is basically a Raven with mCCPM instead of eCCPM so I know what you are talking about.

It is a real pitty that the cost of Century US products end up so expensive here in the UK which make them uncompetative. For instance, I also have a Pred. 90 (great heli) which would cost over £700 now. I could buy an Align t-rex 700 for £480 and spares are freely availiable and cheap.

Silvashadow,

In North America, we experience a similar reverse on pricing with European helis - e.g. Vario and Robbe.

Just curious. What would you pay for other US helis similar to the Predator in the UK - such as a MinAir Fury or Bergen 90 or GS?

Hi Phil,

Found a Bergen Intrepid Magnum 90 listed at £1,299.99 and an MA Stratus 90 3D at £875.00.
