Is that normal to have the Top of the main gear being very close the the frame.

Mine was also close for a couple of reasons.

1. sprag bearing had excess grease in it when I initially set the main gear which had the main gear on an ever so slight angle so I took the bearing out the "squished" the extra grease out.

2. My frame alignment was ever so slightly off, so I loosened the frame bracing and re-aligned.

That said the tolerances between the main gear and frame (above and below) were just too close for my comfort. So I ever so lightly dremeled an extra bit of clearance above and below the main gear on the frame - and now it's perfect

To every action there is always opposed an equal reaction

make sure the bearing blocks are installed correctly. one boss is slightly larger than the other and if these are reversed the mainshaft will set at a slight angle making the gear too close to the frames. how do i know this?? don't ask.
