I had this problem with my electric and wide chord blades. Went to a larger size tail blade and voila problem fixed! I'm using 95mm.

I'm guessing Gyro crash damage...

In the beginning of the thread you said it only kicked out on punchouts. Which means it is holding in hover. If it's holding in a hover the gyro IS working! I would check for tight linkages since you said you reworked the tail. It might be binding up not allowing the tail blades to achieve full pitch. Or as I said if you are using different main blades you might need a different size tail blade to keep up.

yes it only kicks out on punch outs.but it could be the gyro if its setup with enough pitch to hold the heli in a hover.in saying that i usually set up in rate mode and the tail will hold in a hover just fine.i ran the kb dreams on this heli with radix and they worked.looks like i might be pulling the gyro off.

Test it on the bench, If the gyro moves the blades as you move the tail it is working. Another thing to look for is the servo. You can burn out the amp in the 9254s and the servo will still work, but it will move much slower than it's sposed to.

I have seen the 9254s burn out the internal voltage amp a few times, usually after a crash. The servo will still work but it will move much slower than it did new. It's suprising when you compare it against a good one. Like I said test the gyro by cranking up the gain in HH then slowly move the tail to the left and right. IF the blades move as you move the tail the gyro is working. I would then turn my attention to the tail servo.

Yes, if it's a 9254 definitely try another servo first! They are known to be prone to failure and I have had 2 personally fail on me before I decided to stop using them.

I don't run the 401 any more either so don't need a 9254 replacement.

I run the 770/9257, 601/9251 and LogicTech 6100's. I also have a Spartan/BLS251 sitting waiting for a 700N for it to go in. Buying now, the 770/8900G is in 401 price territory and is a MUCH better combo than the 401 IMHO. Some guys have switched over to a Hi-Tec servo instead of the 9254 with the 401, just do a search for the model #.

Okay

So far Ive heard about every possibility for your tail except one unless I missed it on here somewhere. Instead of checking your gain what about your servo throw settings on the gyro. If that is to low your tail will be all over the place. It sounds to me like you had a crash so its a possibiliy that when it was being rattled around it could have moved your setting around since its just a little plastic screw in their. I would almost put money on that being your problem. Let me know if I helped, Raptorman

How high does it go? How fast does it go? Huh huh huh huh???!!!!

I have not seen anyone mention to trim your tail in rate mode first. I have seen one kick out when heading hold was used but when checked in rate mode the trim was way off. It is best if you can set the gyro to rate mode, hover the helicopter and see which way the tail drifts. Then mechanically set the trim and hover again. Once you get the tail so it stays in a hover without drifting then change back to heading hold. It should stop the tail from kicking out.

Yep, that is 100% correct but I had assumed (maybe wrongly) that he had done this since the crash...if not he should for sure!
