Audacity Models Pantera 50 - Tiger 50 > substitute for crank lock tool?

Is there something else I could use to hold the crank besides buying the tool? I need to replace the bearings in my OS50. Thanks fellow Audacity fliers.

Twist fuel tubing down in the cylinder from the glow plug hole. Works for me every time. Leave a bit hanging out of the hole pull it right out after your done. The crank lock tool is good to have but I can never seem to remember to buy one for some reason. (tightwads will not spend money when old fuel tubing works just as well)

Its not a maneuver until your looking down on it. ~Jason Krause~ Phoenix FF 08

I like to use the handle of an old toothbrush. It has enough surface area to distribute the pressure. Just remove the backplate and slide it in. I try not to use anything that contacts the piston itself.

dont do any of these that rely on putting any sort of pressure on the piston. Otherwise, you'll be asking us if we have a spare piston next.

Marty, the Bic Lighter idea is the close. You put it in from the backplate and have the piston rod press it against the side of the case. It is about the best way listed so far.

I have my mother in law talk look at it. Freezes instantly.

I've used almost all these tricks and in the end realized the crank locking tool is the best way . . . it's the very reason I had some made up.

Look, I know you're hoping for a "good enough" quick solution but trust me, there's a very good reason I went to the trouble of having these tools made. I.e. it's like Marty said, next you risk asking us about a piston or rod.

My 2¢

thanks for the advice. Is there something else I can use for gasket material? Readyheli does not have any gaskets in stock. I was thinking about picking up some stuff from the auto parts store. Leaving Iraq in a few days! Hope there's nitro in Hawaii

A gasket for an engine backplate can be made of card stock from a subscription card like you find in magazines.

I've always just used a old toothbruth, the handle end. Its soft enough to not damage the crank or casing, but hard enough to not break apart and leave pieces in the engine. A crank lock is super sweet, but not the only way to get the job done.

get the correct gaskets from Ominmodels, Tower Hobbies or Heliproz. The gasket thickness is important in order to maintain swept volume accuracy as well as keep the internal engine parts aligned. Ever notice a real slight wearmark on the inside of the backing plate? Using a thicker gasket moves this surface farther aft.

Juat drop the few dollars and get the right tool.
I have tried all of "other" tools and it's nice to reach up and pull the correct tool for the job. If your pulling your bearings out of your motor. Read JB's white paper on the subject. Fast easy and if you follow the instructions you will not burn your fingers.

Rubber mallet, with a spruce,(or beech) handle, with a groove cut in the end. Soft microfiber cloth over the timber, then used as any other crank lock. With one exception. With the rubber hammer part of the mallet between ya legs, ya get ya fans and prop(fan) nuts tighter than any other way. Zero artifact damage. Getting them back off isnt for the faint hearted tho.

Or if ya got the 6 bucks, just buy the OEM unit.
