Scale Model RC Helicopters > I'd like to know

I have had a vario bell 47 listed for some time now. R.T.F.. I've gotten some response but nothing like I thought it would. To build one of this heli's is nearly $4000.00 with kit, paint, electronics and the other stuff needed. I would think it would sell like the other ones I've sold not so much at a profit, but at no loss.I thought $3000.00 was a great price for plug and play.
I would like to read what you people think it's worth. Kevin

P.S. is it because almost everyone over rates what they are selling so no one trusts anyone( says it's all good & you get trash )

Lots of guys (like me with my Kavan) with a project that big have to piece it together. So they might buy the kit, then fool with it a little, get the engine, add the electronics later, the details, cockpit kit or whatever, piece meal. Plunking down 3 grand at once, even if its a fair deal, is a tough pill for some folks.

Thats just my thoughts on why you might be having trouble selling it. I'd love to have one but I'd be sleeping with it in the garage I'd have to rent to put it in if my wife saw that withdraw.

your problem may be like mine, i can never get rid of anything i want to sell but all the stuff i dont want to part with, gone in no time. maybe you should decide now that it isnt something you want to part with, and it may be gone before you know it!

A few things here from my perspective:

- Anything more than 2000.00 on RR, it seems that more than 1/2 of the viewers are turned away immediately.

- Scale takes into consideration the builders modeling skills; which is a huge unknown from a posted photo online. Whereas a pod & boom is a mechanical setup issue. Most people who are into scale are perfectionists and are hesitant with other peoples work.

- Many of the scale enthusiasts like scale for the actual process of modeling. Buying something already completed is a turn-off.

- Buying a completed model disqualifies (some CD's may still allow you to compete, but most wouldn't) the ability for competing at AMA Scale events (Nats, Ircha, etc).

Scale ships remind me of my racecar days. It is very rare that you get back out what you put in from modifying the car. The reasons are simular.

In looking at your price, you are asking for $800.00 - $1000.00 less (some would consider the value even lower, based on their own skills of craftmanship, resources, etc) on a used machine when comparing to a brand new unassmebled product. While I won't specifically comment on what you should price it at, I can just tell you my opinion of my buying practices: It has to be a heck of a deal for me to consider a helicopter product that is not new, something that is not easily deconstructed for my quality control standards, or something that fits my vision of detail or paint schemes.

Finally, I think you are killing most of your potential buyers by making them inquire with you to even see the elementary items that may or may not peek their interest. How do you solve this? Post many, many, many pictures. I know you state you have pictures in your gallery, but when I clicked on your post (before you asked the question in here), I immediately stopped reading when I didn't see any pictures.

When I am in a buying mood and looking in the realm of a product that I want, I find myself looking at them non-stop until I make the purchase.

Good luck,
Mike

I find this an interesting post. I had my Vario Turbine Lama advertised for sale after only 2.5 hours use because I realised I had over committed to my flying experience. I had heeps of interest but no purchaser. Living here in New Zealand all parts are imported from around the world,UK,US,Germany. unfortunately we don't have the luxury of scale Models on hand. We pay GST added tax at 12.5% on the package and delivery costs. I have receipts for NZ$31500 that's US$24257.00 12367 UK Pounds so when I first advertised it I removed 32.5% being the GST+20% depreciation. Still no purchaser. At the moment I would let it go for NZ$16000 US12131 6088UK Pounds Just like Brokenheli I'm finding it difficult to understand. Are we really asking too much? Is it normal to expect only 50% of cost?

Selling helicopters scale or not

Colin, it is quite normal to only ashieve 40% of cost
Pod and boom, sell easier, as there are more people who can afford the money, in one hit
A lot of people buy scale, in bits and bobs, so the cost are spread of a long time, in seattle helo's case 3 years, its only when the time comes to sell do we realise what the true cost were, and with scale in the thousands, difficult to find the buyer with that kind of money
Its your hobby, we get a lot of enjoyment from it, so that some of the cost's gone
Think of the guy who smokes and drinks, what return does he get for his enjoyment? nothing
I find, that dealing helps with sales, take somthing back in part exchange, this helps both parties
Good luck with your sale £6000.00 is about what I would expect here in the UK, especially if it was a show winner

I think you also have to take into account the economy at this time..Let's face it, money is tight. Granted when it comes to "Boys and their Toys" the money isssue usually doesn't matter, but as was mentioned in an erlier reply here; to put down that much cash is not easy for most ..and the few that might (Myself included) enjoy the challenge of the build .
So good luck with your sale, I'm sure someone out there would love to own that peice of machinery..Oh and I also agree about the pics..I too turn the page if I can't see what I am about to buy!
