e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Reasonable Power Supply at $2/amp

I was browsing Hobby-Lobby and found their PSs on sale.

For 1-2 chargers, I used to use RadioShack 25amp unit at $100 or $4/amp.

http://www.hobby-lobby.com/powersupply.htm

Their 30amp unit at $60 looks attractive for anyone looking for a PS. At $2/amp it is probably the cheapest PS you will find.
If you intend to used 2 TP1010c at full, I suggest you go for the 40amp unit as each 1010 can pull about 18amps. I do not know the quality of the above unit so tread with caution.

Dimension wise, it looks bigger than RadioShack unit so it might be too bulky for field use with a generator.

That is pretty good at $2.50/amp. Certainly the PS prices have been coming down to the Computer PS prices (well not quite).

How about this one?

I converted ATX PSU but it keep dropping voltage in middle of charge, I tried different resistors. This PSU only have 10amp on +12v rail. Charge 6s1p at 1C does not work at all. Even at 3s1p at 1.5C it get voltage drops.

I have a 12 volt deep cycle marine battery that is kept fully charged by a wall adapter.
When I Use my lipo charger I hook it up to the marine battery.
When I go to the field it gets plugged into the cigarette lighter
and also on the way home.
If the power goes out I can still charge my lipo's and I can also plug in my inverter to power my PC or TV

My Question is

Is this not a better solution as a Power supply ?

I use a battery also Because of the clean power you get out of it, If I'm on my main work bench charging 1 pack or other types of batts (non-r/c use) I'll use the power supply. You must remember not everybody wants to keep a large battery in there house or apartment.

It really depends on the amount of flying you intend to do at the field. Trex600 uses 6s5000 (about 12ah out of 12v car/deep cycle). You will get about 5 charges out of a fresh battery. That translates to about 4min x 5 or 20min. If you plan to do whole day of flying, maybe 10flights at 4min each, you will have to carry 2 fully charged 60ah deep cycle batteries.

For someone with 2 packs, with plans on 5-6 flights each day, deep cycle battery will go far. You can also do 1-2 charges from your car battery with out any damage. If you don't mind running the car in idle, you can continue to charge from the car battery.

I see
so it realy depends on the size of batteries your recharging.

I have a lil trex 450sa with 3s 2200 25c batteries maybe that is why it works for me

So if I get a 500 size heli with 2 X 6s 5000 25c batteries, Will I need a good power supply even with a deep cycle battery ?

Have you seen a 500 on a 6s 5000 ? ya it is overkill but I have and if I had the money for it WoW thats the way I would go
Saw a guy at the field flying a MHS Protos 6s5000 simply stunning
