Gasser Model RC Helicopters > Happy I did't sell my Spectra but I goofed up...

Hello guys, I am really happy I didn't sell my Spectra. Well, the piston ring on the 231 it had broke and my piston is a mess... Well I will try and order the parts for it and see if I can fix it up. One question about this, on the top of the head there is a legend that says TRM-MA-10167. Could it that this engine might have been modified by Toxic Al? Or these are just regular engines that came with the original Spectra?

Well my tragedy today came when I was breaking in my Hanson 260, that by the way, what a job by Al and his people at Hanson, the engine even on the rich side didn't vibrate at all what an engine!! Well I was really happy with everything when suddenly on the fourth tank the heli just lost control and down it went... It turns out that my Duralite Li-Ion batteries were down to 6V that was it. How stupid of me to never check my voltage in between flights. Well now about $200 bucks of parts will have my Spectra in the air in a week, hopefully...

So this makes just another point to buy Raja's generator... I will have to buy it next month...

Finally one more question, how do you guys choke the engine with a pancake filter? If it wasn't because my Spectra came with the adapter so that you can start it with a regular electric starter and wand, I would have had a tough time starting the engine. That is the only point I would have to consider if/when I put the generator, I'll loose the capacity to have an alternate way to start the heli...

Regards, and remember to check your batteries before you fly...

On my Predator with the stock 231 and v2 pipe just pumping the primer bulb a few times and it starts on the second or third pull after sitting for weeks. Maybe the low needle is too lean cause the only other common issue for having to choke would be low compression or a stuck ring. I have never had a modified low cc pull start motor. Even on my large 2 smoke engines in my off road cars, 1 600cc and 1 400cc I never need to choke them either no matter how cold it is. I guess you could try to put your hand around the filter best you can and pull it a few times or get a choke kit made for those type filters from Daves motors.

To choke the motor without a choke is easy.Close your throttle all the way pull a few times or until it fires then turn throttle up to idle speed. It should be running in three pulls.

I feel your pain on the crash do to batteries issue.I lost my Bergen do to using the wrong type of battery.I do now Have Raja's Genera
tor installed and it works great.

If you bought your Spectra from MA it would come with a modified 231 from TRM

I crashed my spectra from a dead battery too. So stupid and I cracked my left side frame along with all the other stuff.

I am using the MA filter and was able to put a choke between it and the carb. I think I got it from daves motors but I and to modify it a little bit to get it to fit.

Actually, I was talking to Al at TRM and he was telling me that they don't provide modified engines for Miniature Aircraft anymore, and haven't for some time.

Your best bet is to call Al directly at TRM and see if he can identify it.

Choking

With the Minair cleaner, start the engine on "kill". Mine takes 4 pulls on cold to fire, it starts a little fast (lean) and when it richens up it slows down and dies unless I move the trim up from kill. It gives me about 5 seconds to do so, so I start it, and then raise the trim gradually to mid trim to maintain the initial idle speed.

Sorry to hear about the dead battery crash, that's the problem with lipos with a regulator, when they die you don't get any warning as the regulator keeps the voltage up until the last second.

If the motor is stamped TRM or whatnot, then its definately Al's motor. Send it to him and have him fix it for you.
