Nice, the only thing I don't understand is John C is always talking how bad the weather is in the UK, it looked pretty nice on that day. It's nice to see a lot of hard work paying off, great work John.

Thanks for the comment Big Guy. Believe it or not but that one minute clip of film took 1 1/2 hours to shoot. For those that may be interested the heli is a Joker 2 with a full blown Carvec set up (I'll post some pics soon). This project took a year from the initial suggestion to the final purchase of the system with many presentations thrown in. I expect there may be some that are possibly thinking "Oh No, whats a fireman doing with this, does he even know what he is doing"? I have been a heli flyer for 7 years now and its great that my hobby has now become part of my work. Even though our machine is sub 7kgs, I pre-empted the proposed changes to the ANO by including the restrictions for vehicles of over 7kgs in our operating procedures/documents. There have been a few other Police/Fire services who have trialled a lightweight system (Micro-Drone) and i later found out that the people conducting these trials had no r/c experience whatsoever and therefore no understanding of the Air Navigation Order, they were just suckered in by the salesman. I beliieve this may have been a contributary factor to the proposed changes to the ANO.(see my posts in Changes to CAA Regulations) Anyway, if anyone wants more info on the heli then just let me know and i'll oblige.
Graham.

Hey Graham,
It is so interesting to see how rc AP/AV systems are helping in important community services like firefight and law enforcement.
I imagined how hard it probably was to introduce the idea and project to the "bosses" until completion.
Excellent combination: Maxi Joker + Carvec.
Keep up and congratulations!

Good job Graham,

Unfortunantly we haven't been getting any rain and lots of wildfires, our skies have been saturated with smoke for the past couple of months. Hopefully this all helps in the roles UAV's could play. Send some rain our way we could use a nice drenching over here.

Thanks for all the positive notes guys. I'd also like to say thanks to everyone that has posted in the AP section of R/R as it helped me a great deal during the early days of researching this project. I only hope I can repay you all by providing useful images thereby raising the profile of this part of the R/C industry.

Great work Graham! Haven't seen any large electric helicopters like that used by the services yet, they've always been the micro-drones ...

Nice setup mate!

Really nice to see that Graham I've been talking to a couple of friends of mine in the fire service and put the idea to them as well as another agency I cannot mention, all seemed very positive about it's possibility.

It's just to get the demo up and running I as a private small business it's a huge investment in time and cash (with no other funding streams for the demo version). Although the other agency would used fix wing so currently working on a demo model to show them.

You had a thermal camera up yet? I would imagine that would be a even greater tool for the job you gents do.

Well done Graham - you deserve all the recognition you get.

People won't realise just how much hard work went into the project. I think it is the first time anyone has done a side-by-side comparison to evaluate the different systems available today. Not only has he had to get it through all the various stages of selection and approval and then to the final purchase, but he has also been in close contact with the CAA throughout to make sure they are happy with all the operating procedures etc he has written.

I think this is a groundbreaking project for small UAV's in the UK. It is an ideal application for a sub 7Kg Joker sized machine - in terms of available payload for a decent camera system and the ability to cope with 20mph+ wind - and the end result can really make a difference.

Once people get to see it being used like this http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/He...West.4237246.jp then we can hopefully start to shake off the general perception that these are just toys.

hi all, sorry for the delay in posting some photos but things have been busy for me just lately (plus the fact that i can only upload on mondays). Anyway, if you check out my gallery you will see our system set-up, we are using a Joker 2 with a full carvec system (all the modules), actro 24-5 with 18 tooth pinion, 2x8000mah TP lipos, 710 blades, new carvec custom camera mount, 2.4 ghz downlink, canon A640 for stills, Sony HD5 for video and soon to be added is a thermal image camera. Maximum take-off weight is 6.8kgs and Max flight time is about 15 mins but most flights provide enough information after 5-6 mins. First operational incident was a great success and justified all the effort in getting this project off the ground (no pun intended) as the images helped save at least half of the workshop and its contents. Obviously i can only post photos that have already been released into the public domain (newspapers/tv) but i'll keep you updated as best i can. Hopefully this should raise the profile of our machines and people will stop seeing them just as big boys toys.
Thanks for all the support guys,
Graham.........
