Synergy R/C Synergy N9 > Who needs hyper hub anyway?

One of the most popular upgrades for the N9 is the HyperHub (I mean the fan hub) - why? what is it improoving? is it important?

It doesnt sound like you built your bird yet.. however if you have and you have no problems spending the extra time/effort dialing the hub in for a vibe free setup then you dont need a hyperhub

ofir,

The hyper as well as the SE hub will make the motor sound and run a little smoother because the hub has a tighter grip on the crank, over stock. And as spdntckt said the time factor is too high and its very hard to get very low runout numbers. The harder you tighten the engine nut the more off center the top of the stock hub will move due to the use of collars. So you have to slowly tighten the hut and recheck/change the stock hub position to keep it centered. Then when you think your done and go at tightening the engine hut one more time you have a 50/50 chance the hub will move out to 0.002 or 0.004 inch or more. It's not worth the effort and time.

With any hub you still need to dial indicate the clutch shaft. Any error in the hub will be amplified in the clutch shaft. If the hub is out 0.002inch for example the end of the clutch shaft will be 0.010 or more. The top bearing block on the pinion won't last long and the engine vibrations will be too high.

You scared me...
I aready built the machine. all looks fine and smooth. - test flight will be next week.

I have ordered the SE tail hub with the additions bearings and bolts. - thought it was the only necessary upgrade.

ofir,

just out of curiosity, what did you dial the stock hub to. And how long did it take to get there.

Last time I dialed with a stock hub it took me about 2 hours too long and that was 2 hours.

Hyperhub took about 10 minutes of less if I remember correctly.

I don't understand, it was very easy- maybe I was lucky.
it was one of the first steps.
I had no dial inicator to straight the clutch shaft, but it looks good as is.

The hard part for me was the torque tube assembly - I had to use a rubber hammer to insert the hex coupler to the tube even after heating the tube, but finally it fits with no damage.

Ofir -

without a dial indicator it will be very difficult to see if the hub is aligned with zero (or very little) runout. it might look straight, but in reality it will have a slight 'wobble' to it. this 'wobble' gets amplified out toward the end of the start shaft. The symptom is typically more vibration (you can see foaming fuel/etc) as well as a worn bearing in the top bearing block.

if yours is perfect as it then consider yourself very lucky! most do not have that result.

Be careful with that, the tighter the fit the more chance the splines on the couplers are no more, hope you pinned that torque tube.

I'll second spdntckt's response. Simply looking good isn't good enough - humans senses simply aren't good enough to tell if it's really "straight". The amount of error (called runout) considered "good enough" is typically 0.0508 mm. That's 1/3 the thickness of a human hair.

Typically, the HyperHub or SE hub gives a runout smaller than 0.025 mm (though many report runouts smaller than their dial indicator can measure)

There's an instructional video at Synergy's webpage for how to adjust a stock hub.

Are there any SE parts included in the current N9 kits?

I did not pinned it: however, used red locktite and changed the m3 bolts to m4 (the part came unthreaded - another synergy bug). - I don't think that that darn thing will ever come out.
