I have a Trex 500 and want to take it with me to work to do some flying on my lunch break. Problem is I live in Phoenix Arizona and the daytime temps get up to 115 degrees outside which puts the temps in my car at easily 150 degrees. My question is would it be bad to leave my heli in my car? I have a bag that I will take my Lipos and TX inside with me but I don't have room to take my heli inside of my work. Would this be a bad idea, is that kind of heat going to do any damage to my heli?

I wouldn't have any problem leaving my heli in a hot car but not the LiPos and radio, so yes I would take them inside. Talking with Howard at FMA, I learned temps above 140F damage LiPos. And on the radio I would just rather it not be abused by heat or anything really. The rest of the heli will be fine.

Although I'm tempted myself in storing my heli in my car, I've hear that carbon blades can wrap badly if exposed to high temperatures for some ammount of time...

Heli in trunk and batteries in office will be just fine.

I wish I could fly 24/7

some tips for hot weather...

get a large cooler for the ultimate peace of mind.

or get two...one for heli and Tx plus misc and a smaller one just for lipos.

leave windows with a little crack (1/4 inch) to hot air escape.

leave a/c vents open...not in "recirculating" mode

If you car have foldable back seats for access to trunk...also leave a little open to let accumulated heat out of trunk to escape via cracked windows

get a car alarm if you dont have one...cheaper than replacing your heli goods and your insurance should give you a discount for such.

enjoy your lunch flying fix

I leave my vibe in my trunk all the time. Although it rarely gets above 90 where I live.

Get a life? How the hell do you fly a life?

Screw that.. put it right on the end of your desk.. I bring my helis to work every single Friday =D

Even the CEO comes by and wants to see whats new.

I'm a Corporate Network Administrator and I just put them on the desk closest to the door in my office so peeps can see them as they walk by =D.

I take my lipos inside, but I leave my 610C charger in the car, the chargers case gets to 150 degrees when charging at full blast and is normal for it, so no problem in the trunk

I have had a little problem with my 7703D gyro after it got hot sitting in the sun in the back of my truck for a short time. Once it cooled off in the shade it was fine. So a little cool down period at the field might be in order.

Yea, I'm not worried about the charger getting too hot, I bring it inside because I use it at work! Fly before work, charge at work, fly at lunch, charge at work, fly after work...

Everybody is stressing about the radio(transmitter?) but blithely ignoring all the electronics (RX, Gyro, Volts watch,) etc.
These are just as vulnerable to overheatingin sunlight.

IMO, there are very few cars which have an insulated boot (trunk) Therefore, they act as an oven!

As other posters have suggested, ventilation is a big help, parking in the shade should be a priority.

I left my Blade CP in my trunk and the plastic wrap around the stock
wood blades got hot enough to split. I guess it started to shrink it too much from the heat. I've decided to avoid leaving my heli's in my car.

i cant see carbon fiber blades doing much of anything due to heat since they can handle high temps.

if anything heat will damage your gyro and batteries and an aluminum tail boom will stretch/shrink badly at those temperature changes. dont see it hurting a radio...except the battery of course.

either way its not really a good idea to leave such a delecate piece of electronics/machinery in a hot enviroment. i sure wouldnt yank it out of the car and immediately start flying it.

I got an idea, leave the car running with AC on while you're at work inside. Guaranteed no damage to the heli nor the lipos

I'm also in AZ. I take mine out of the car including the radio. It's way to hot to risk leaving it. I take the radio too. I get some funny looks in my office but they are used to it now.

I worry too much about the electronics getting ruined.
