A little over a year ago I had to put down my dearly loved Doppler, a 9yo Schnauzer. He died of stomach cancer. Just about killed me.

Doppler

Shortly there after I adopted Bella, a mix (maybe some sort of Catalan Terrier mix) for a girlfriend. She was an obnoxious brat. Kinda funny looking, but very smart. Girlfriend and I broke up, she ended up keeping dog. I just found out she ran out in front of a car and was killed. Two dogs in a little more than a year. Man, this sucks. I don't think I could ever do it again.

Sorry to hear about your dogs dogs! I had to put my 11 y.o. yellow lab down a little over a year ago due to pancreatic cancer.

I know it sucks losing a friend but time heals everything and eventually you'll get the itch for another dog!

Same here, it is painful to lose a good dog. I just lost mine to the ripe old age for a dog of 18 years a month ago. Had him before I was married. He and the wife had a love hate relationship, but he love my new son when he was born. He was the last of a line of related dogs from my teen age years. I kick myself for not getting around to getting a new puppy out of him. They are all missed. It was a very hard thing for me and my son to take him back to my parents place to be buried on the homeplace. I though I myself would not want another. But I am starting to miss the brushes of his fur against my leg. The reassurance of him being at my feet and to my aid when needed. He can never be replace completely. But, the friendship of a dog in general is a great treat. Better to have had the chance to know them and lose them, than to live life with out those moments of delight they provide when life has got you down.

Ah well, this is a topic i am very familiar with, i grew up with German shepards, always 3 around from the time i was born... Remember waking up for school and having to bury a pet a few times over the course of my dog history and it is the most miserable thing ever. Stopped having dogs for a while coz i got tired of that routine.

Tell you what though, every time i see someone with a dog i am tempted, the highs make up in spades for the lows. Living in Singapore now so not the most ideal place to own a big dog but mannnnnn do i ever miss having one around. I'll have one the moment i have the space to let it tear about again.

Sorry to hear your sad news. I love my animals more than most people, mostly because they've earned it many times over.

Doppler was one of those dogs most people should strive to be. As long as you were not a squirrel you were loved.

Parsifal, a little off subject. But it is a small world. I am in Singapore at the moment. Heading to Batam Island this afternoon for business. I have only see one dog here so far and it was a small pekingese.

The really sad thing is my now-ex-wife had gotten Doppler early in our marriage, then adopted another schnauzer, Emily, a short bit before we divorced. Putting Doppler to sleep was the last thing we did before the divorce. Last year was kinda crappy. Beezie was not so much my dog as the exgfs.

I actually put in an application for a schnauzer mix (REGINALD BARTHOLOM) today. If all goes right hopefully I can drive to Houston this weekend and have a look. I am kinda partial to the breed.

what a coincidence that this thread pops up. my wife and i are taking our 17 year old cocker/dauksan mix to be put down tomorrow. her body is just giving out on her. we adopted her as a stray when she was 2. we have three other dogs, all were strays. we've both been through this many times but it never gets any easier. we know we're doing the right thing, but there's still alot of guilt. they just don't live long enough.

i don't have problems, i create them!

got my wifey and little girl a beautiful 10 week old little german shepherd puppy. he turned 12 yrs old yesterday. my little girl turned 21 the day before. about 18 mos. ago i thought we were gonna have to put him down because of a severe back problem, he couldn't take three steps without falling over or having to sit down.you could tell he didn't want to show any weakness.he's a strong minded and very dominate male. we found a vet. that does chiropractic and accupuncture about 100 miles away and took him for some treatments(not cheap) and it helped tremendously. they diagnosed him with degenerative disc disease. he's getting pretty bad again and i don't think he'll make it through the summer. he and i tolerate each other(my wife say we are alot alike) but either one of us would die protecting the ones we love. i will miss him when he goes, it will be a sad day. my wife will cry, my little girl will cry.

I agree. Somebody really screwed up when they didn't make dogs live as long as their owners...

I got this the other day in an email:

God created the donkey and told him: you will work tireless from sun up to sun down, carrying heavy bags on your back, you'll eat grass, you will not have intelligence and you will live 50 years. You will be a DONKEY!

The donkey answered: I'll be a donkey, but living 50 years is too much, give me only 20 years. And God gave him 20 years.

God created the dog and told him: You will look after the man's house, you will be his best friend, you will eat whatever they give you and you will live 25 years. You will be a DOG!

The dog answered: God, living 25 years is too much, give only 10. God gave him 10 years.

God created the monkey and told him: You will jump from branch to branch, you will do silly things, you will be amusing and you will live 20 years.

The monkey answered: God, living 20 years is too much, give me only 10 years. And God agreed.

Finally, God created man, and told him: You will be Man, the only rational being on this earth, you will use your intelligence to control other animals, you will dominate the world and you will live for 20 years.

The man answered: God, I'll be man, but living 20 years is not enough, why don't you give me the 30 years that the donkey refused, the 20 years that the dog did not want and the 10 years that the monkey refused.

That was what God did, and since then, Men live 20 years like a man, then he enters adulthood and spends 30 years like a donkey, working and carrying the load on his back, then when his children leave home, spends 15 years like a dog, looking after the house and eating whatever is given to him, then he gets into retirement, and spends 10 years like a monkey, jumping from house to house or from children to children, doing silly things to amuse the grandchildren.

That really sucks!!

I actually just got back from the vet, I know its not a dog but I had to put my cat down today. Had her since I was 16 but I guess today was the day (she was 17 years old). Last month my Dad passed away and this month my cat had to be put down. Its been a depressing couple of months to say the least!!

We have lost more pets-(Cats & Dogs) than I can recall.
Everyone hurts.
The hurt you feel is the price you pay for loving them.

Our mini labradoodle "Honey" is just over 2yrs old.

I lost 2 cats (Dolby and Salem) before she came along. I loved those cats, but I've learned to love again. I can't imagine not having Honey!
