My Dell Dimension 8400, Pentium 4, is behaving very strangley. Shortly after powerup, the chip cooling fan accelerates like its going to explode! I opened the hood, blew out the dust bunnies, removed the chip cooling tower and noted the thermal paste had dryed and caked up. Cleaned the chip and cooling tower base, reapplied silver thermal paste, and the computer performed normally during the next bootup. However, it is now back into the original mode of the cooling fan spooling up and the computer doing nothing. Any ideas? Will certainly appreciate any help you guys can offer.

Thanks!

It sounds to me like either you chip or your south bridge is on the way out. Do you have a thermocouple that you can test the temp of the chip with? Thermal paste it right underneath the die and run the wires in between the pins.

Get a life? How the hell do you fly a life?

you might bebale to play with the cpu throttling settings and see if thats causeing the issue.

Look for a blown or bulged cap on the motherboard.

Same Problem

Caliber1 - did you ever get the issue resolved? I have the same hardware and same exact issue with the computer not booting and the CPU fan accelerating like it is going to explode. Any solution would be helpful.

Thanks!

While you re-applied the thermal paste between the Pentium IC and its heat sink, did you also re-apply paste between the thermistor that is underneath the Pentium IC.

That thermistor is used to sense the temperature of the Pentium and adjusts the cooling fan speed. Perhaps the thermal paste there is causing the temp to be incorrectly sensed and causing the fan to run fast.

When replacing such an IC, I always bend the thermistor up a tad so that when paste is applied and then the IC is seated, there is good contact between the 2.

I missed the not booting up part.

In addition to the above, check to see if your PS is providing all the correct voltages. If have an extra PS around, swap it out and see what happens. Hopefully it's not the motherboard.

I recently cracked my motherboard after removing the chip for a newer faster one. The machine would not even boot to the power on self test.

One motherboard replacement later and I have a new machine...

When I took out the old MB, it was bowed like a banana.

Is your dell still in warranty?

If not then you are in for a new computer as Dell stuff is largely proprietary and not easily upgraded.

umdpru, now that's one heck of a fan to bend a MB.

What blades are you using? What's your headspeed?

No, it happened when I pressed the heatsink on to it. It stressed the board out. My machine didn't even think of booting. Only powered up very momentarily.

umdpru, you're right about Dell's proprietary hardware.

The PC manufacturers always seem to OEMize their hardware, requiring you to go to them. In addition, if he has to get another MB, it will be a refurbished one that is sold as new.

Even the Windows software they install has been OEMized.
