Radio - Servo - Gyro - Gov - Batt > GY 401 HELP!! Violent ground pirouettes.

What's up Fellas? I need a little help on a Futaba GY401 Gyro. I normally do NOT do Futaba!! However, this ship was purchaded as a gift with JR Servos, receiver and a 401 gyro.

Recently, I was hovering and the ship developed a wag. Every 6 seconds it would wag 3 or 4 times then stop repeatedly. While I was trying to figure out the problem on the radio etc. I went to hover it and there was nothing! It was like the gyro wasn't on. The servo had quit working ( Futaba 9253 ) and that joker was HOT!! I think/guess I fried it?

Anyway, I replaced the servo with a JR 4131 non digital servo. I turned the DS switch on the 401 to off. However, now I get violent pirouette whenever the ship gets lite on the skids.

Also, is there a reverse swith on that Gyro?

When I rotate the nose of the ship to the left the servo arm rotates clockwise and pushes the tail rod. However, when I move the rudder stick to the right the servo arm moves counter- clockwise..

I set the limits on the actual Gyro so there's no binding. The sensitive or 5th channel is set to 100% both ways.

Rudder is set 110% to the Right and 85% to the left.

I moved the delay nob on the Gyro all the way from one end to the other and still have the same problem.

I wrapped the gyro in some serious foam. More than an inch thick all the way around! Looked pretty silly.. ( I had to be sure it wasn't vibration) Even then at the low idle points the Gyro was sending a signal to the tail. Almost full throw so I decrease the sensitivity so there was not such an aggressive throw at idle but still had the violent pirouettes.

Can anyone help?

Yes, see above^

thats way too high. cut that value down to say, 30 to 40%

Don't know which side it started at before you went from "one end to the other" but I don't think that was a good idea.

Yeah, I bet
Maybe not a stellar idea though. The mount needs to secure and just rigid enough so it can't move around.

"El Dooderino" if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

Try this, Set delay to 0, reverse the servo in the Tx.

JR servos move in the opposite direction as Futaba. Flip the reverse switch on the gyro and you should be set.

JR rotates opposite direction from Futaba for a given stick command.

Since you replaced a Futaba servo with a JR servo, you need to reverse the GYRO direction using the NOR/REV switch on the 401 body, AND you need to reverse the RUDDER channel in the TX.

Gotta remember to reverse both the gyro AND the TX directions...

You didn't say which heli, but if it's a belt driven tail, look for loose pulleys on their shafts, or a slipping belt as the cause of your original tail wag that got worse.

Foam is a bad idea. The gyro actually needs to be somewhat rigidly attached to the heli so it can sense minute movements.

DELAY should be ZERO, this function is for slower servos, not fast ones.
